Two-Gun Cohen: A Biography, by Daniel S. Levy

A chunky Jewish battler from the East End of London, a con man, cardsharp, and charlatan-with-a-heart who became a bodyguard to Sun Yat-sen and a general in the Chinese Army, Morris "Two-Gun" Cohen was one of the most unusual adventurers of the twentieth century. He earned the name "Two-Gun" because wherever he went he always packed two pistols, which he wasn't afraid to use. Born into devout piety and dire poverty, Cohen did not appear to have a promising future. The eldest son of Orthodox Jewish parents, he nevertheless quickly developed into an incorrigible juvenile delinquent. Arrested in 1900 for picking pockets, Cohen was sent to reform school and then shipped off to western Canada. There he spent years wandering from Manitoba to British Columbia, picking pockets and hustling as he went. He regularly played poker at a Chinese gambling den in Saskatoon and one evening stumbled into the middle of an armed robbery. He did what came naturally to him—but what was unheard of at the time—he came to the defense of a Chinese man and knocked the robber out. That selfless act gained him the respect of the Chinese community; and a career in the Chinese revolution. After sailing to China in 1922, Cohen became an aide to President Sun Yat-sen and an influential man in Nationalist China, ending up as a general despite the fact that he never learned Chinese.

From Library Journal
Levy, a staff reporter for Time magazine, tells the picaresque story of Jewish adventurer Morris Cohen, who in a small way helped influence events in China. Born in Russia of Orthodox Jewish parents and reared in England, Cohen was a hustler, card sharp, and con man who was eventually forced to emigrate to Canada. There, he did the unthinkable in the early 20th century when he came to the aid of a Chinese man. This singular event endeared him to the Chinese community and changed his life. Ultimately, Cohen went to China, where he became the bodyguard of Sun Yat-sen, unifier of modern China. Well researched and written, Levy's biography lets us view the events that shaped history through Cohen's eyes. Although sympathetic to Cohen, Levy has written an unbiased account of his life that is particularly strong in its portrayal of life in Russia, England, Canada, and China in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. From Kirkus Reviews
Soon after the turn of the century a Jewish Cockney adventurer arrived in Canada, seeking his--or somebody's--fortune. How he evolved into a general in the Chinese Republican Army, and a notorious soldier of fortune as well, is carefully recounted by Levy, a reporter for Time magazine, in his debut biography. Morris Cohen, scion of a religious Jewish family, spent his youth much like the Artful Dodger, picking pockets in the East End of London, precincts which were haunted by the likes of Jack the Ripper. After multiple arrests and a stint in a reformatory, the young hustler made his way to the Canadian prairies, where he became a sometime carny huckster and a full-time card shark, often attracting the attention of the local constabulary. But after service in the Great War, through force of personality and a loud voice, he became something of a community leader, especially among the beleaguered Chinese of the Canadian West. His affinity for the underdog soon made him their sole Caucasian lodge brother and eventually brought him to the attention of the father of the Chinese Republic, Sun Yat-sen. Cohen instantly became a Sun worshipper and, with guns on both ample hips, a bodyguard to the great man and, later, factotum to his widow, the redoubtable Soong. Through a hellish internment during WW II and the turbulent events in postwar China, Two-Gun plied his adventurer's trade. Alas, there's no retirement plan for that trade, and the aging rogue, without savings, became a tiresome Mnchausen, ever expansive about his powers. Levy attempts to set the tangled record straight after exhaustive, detailed research and interviews on three continents. The man he brings to life isn't Lawrence of Arabia; he is a sweeter character. He is Cohen of China. A diverting tale of the life and crimes of a unique Old China Hand, intertwined with the story of modern China. Review
Cohen had an interesting life, and Daniel S. Levy, a reporter for Time magazine, has carefully and colorfully laid it out in this new biography. Mr. Levy has sifted through a voluminous historical record, interviewed those still around who knew Cohen from the old days and, in particular, sorted out truth from legend in piecing together Cohen's peripatetic life.

This sorting out is particularly commendable, given that Cohen's life had, until now, been understood through "The Life and Times of General Two-Gun Cohen," a biography that Cohen wrote in the 1950's with Charles Drage, a writer. The Drage book, Mr. Levy shows convincingly, is filled with sensationalizing details that just happen not to be true.

Perhaps sitting around the lobbies of hotels in his waning years, Cohen was a blowhard, but he emphatically did not lead a boring life... Cohen's life was intertwined with the turmoil of the 20th century in China, to which Mr. Levy proves himself a reliable and informative guide.... Cohen was far from the major player he made himself out to be, but as a minor player, he deserves the spot in the historical panorama that Mr. Levy has given him. -- The New York Times, September 15, 1997

Daniel Levy, a Time magazine reporter, has more than done his subject proud. In tracing Cohen's metamorphosis, Levy has unearthed every police blotter his subject ever disgraced, interviewed every person who remembers Cohen and read every scrap of information about him.

Levy's particularly good at scene-setting, at creating the sounds and flavour of East London, of the Canadian Prairies during the century's first decades, of China's bloody struggle to modernize, of the casual brutality of its Japanese conquerors.... The Cohen we get is an uneducated, bumptious fellow, full of swagger and bravado. He is a card sharp, a gambler and a scam artist, who lucked into his China connection through gambling ties established in Saskatoon. Nevertheless, he is also a man genuinely committed to China ... enormously generous, capable of great warmth and devoted to his family, upon which he lavished expensive gifts. There's a real poignancy to Levy's account of his failed marriage, the end of which marked the end of his active life. -- The Globe and Mail, September 13, 1997

I used to joke about Two-Gun Cohen but it was not until I read Mr. Levy's book that I realized what a curious life he had led. A very thorough, ingenious piece of research. -- Saul Bellow

Thorough analysis and interesting reading
By Richard Katz
I have just had the opportunity to read the customer review posted by Michael Alderton regarding this very fine biography. I am not even sure if we have read the same book. I found " Two-Gun Cohen" a fascinating and illuminating account of both the life of a man and one of the major historical events of the 20th Century. I have bought this book for friends, family and associates who have likewise found it quite engaging and informative. I must in fairness say that I know the author, Daniel Levy. The idea that the author, in Michael Alderton's words, is "incredibly superficial", unfairly objective", and "ill-informed" makes me feel that either Michael Alderton as an ax to grind or some other hidden agenda. Daniel is a Senior Reporter at Time magazine, where he is highly regarded for his talent and objectiveity. I know the meticulous and conscientious methods used by him while writing "Two-Gun Cohen". Over a period of four years Daniel circled the world twice in order to retrace all of Cohen's steps. He interviewed a vast number of people who knew Cohen-including those who had never spoken on the record about their relaitonship with him-and triple checked all his sources. Maybe P. T. Barnum had it right when he noted that people are easily duped. Cohen, who spent time in a side show, obviously relied on this for there is no denying that the tall-tale telling Cohen was quite a charmer. And while Mr. ALderton seems to have trouble separating the real Cohen from the myth, the rest of us thankfully have Daniel Levy's engroosing biography in order to understand the true nature of Two-Gun Cohen.

Painstaking research & excellent writing
By deanbarrett@mindspring.com
I have known of Two Gun Cohen for years but assumed it would now be impossible to find out further details of his life. But Daniel Levy has done an incredible job of research and in bringing Cohen to life as he really was. As Cohen tended to brag or obscure a bit it cannot have been easy to find the real man. Cohen's life seems to prove that life really can be stranger than fiction. But for anyone interested in China and true adventure, this is the book. Dean Barrett (author: Hangman's Point)

A Man's Adventure, A Nation's Fate
By Eric Langager
First of all, I should say that my primary reason for reading this book was not because of some particular interest in the story of Two-Gun Cohen. My first attraction to this book grew from my interest in the history of China, and particularly modern China, which I date from the Macartney's mission in 1783. This book did not disappoint. It is a very useful addition to the study of China in the period from the 1911 revolution through the Communist revolution of 1949 and beyond. It gives very little insight into the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976), but there is lots of stuff written on that period.
I have not read anything else by this author, so I cannot make comparisons to his other work, but I will say one thing: I like a guy who does his homework. This book is nothing if not well researched. That is, in fact, it's main strength. I used to be a country school teacher-believe me, I have heard every excuse in the book for why the homework wasn't done. And I have become weary in recent years of "historians" who pretend to be writing history, but in fact have no interest in what actually happened. Ever go to a library and try to get Gore Vidal's "Lincoln?" It's in the fiction section. Or how about Oliver Stone, who openly admits (without any sense of shame) that he plays loose with the facts? That kind of stuff sells to a nation of people who are products of the American public school system. But for those who really care about what actually happened, a higher standard must prevail. Daniel Levy holds to that standard, and even helps to establish it, because his careful workmanship serves as an example to those who would address the same period. Bottom line: this is just very good history.
Now to the story. This book addresses the question of who Cohen is in comparison with how he presented himself, or allowed himself to be presented. Cohen was not the "mover and shaker" that he is sometimes said to be. But he was not just a worthless pretender, either. As I see it, Cohen distinguished himself in two areas: He was a very good body guard for Sun Yat Sen, and he also had the dubious distinction of being a first rate gun runner. Other than that, he doesn't seem to have been able to get by without some kind of a hustle. He started life as a petty crook, and this set a pattern that really prevented him from having dependable, gainful employment when the chips were down. I don't mean that he could never get away from the life of crime. What I mean is that, because he took the easy way out as a youth, he never took the time to learn a trade. I always encourage young people to develop a marketable skill that they can fall back on if they ever need to. This is something Cohen never did, and there was a time in his later life when it really would have come in handy. While Sun Yat Sen was alive, Cohen was riding high. But after he died, and especially after World War II, Cohen suffered a long period of marginal or nonexistent employment. Nothing wrong with being an adventurer, but it really helps if you have a trade skill to take you through the dry periods.
Toward the end of his life, Cohen did manage to secure some very good work as a consultant because of his contacts in China. These connections, by the way, were genuine. It would be grandiose in the extreme to suggest that Cohen shaped the future of China. But he was well acquainted with some of those who did. That part of his self-presentation was not made up.
I gave this book five stars because it was so well researched. But it is also a very personal story of a man that I think, in some way, we all aspire to be. I respect Cohen for daring to step out and discover a world that so many of his peers shied away from. He was not satisfied with the ordinary. And he was in many ways a very likeable, if sometimes pathetic person. This was a very enjoyable book. It is not as quick a read as some others, partly because the author went to great lengths to verify his assertions. But I think any honest reader will find it to be a worthy contribution to the literature.

very interesting
By moises pittounikos
This Degrelle guy is mention in a documentary on You Tube. Apparently he's 'the Homer of the war', or something along those lines. So this is an impressive badge and because I'm a fan of Homer, I bought it.

Degrelle doesn't write like Homer, unfortunately, however, his Hitler Democrat is very readable. Forget the Evil One for a moment, it's somewhat refreshing to read about those Germans without the almost religious eulogy about evil this and evil that and aggressive this and bear hooligan that. Leone Degrelle treats Germans like human people.

One criticism. This book isn't footnoted and referenced and I had to resort to Google to check the mans sources. Most of the sources seem ok. It needs referencing because I'm no expert and because of the subject, this book will never ever be reviewed by a proper historian and so I have no reference point to check if what is inside is valid or not. The book reads well and there is no hate in these pages and, so, I must say, our celebrity historians like Nail Ferguson are utter cowards for not listening to the other side of the story. They say progress is when the old generation dies off and so we will have to wait a few more generations before we get a balanced look on what happened back then. Personally, I reckon by then, the war and Hitler will be as interesting to the average person as the Napoleonic wars.

Anyway, Degrelle argues that it wasn't all roses and sweetness after the Great War and that Adolf Hitler rose from a nobody to the master of Europe because Europe needed a saviour because the Bolshevics were at the gates. Arthur Koestler also says a similar thing. Not about the need for Hitler, but Koestler talks about the Bolshevic made famine in the Ukraine which happened before the Nazis came to power and that there were loads of the people who caused that famine living in Germany. Indeed, Germany was overrun with international socialists and so Germany was a very dangerous place. Koestler, by the way, can't bring himself to say that the National Socialists were an answer to the international socialists. And even though the international socialists were rampaging years before Adolf Hitler came onto the scene, clever people like Koestler don't dare say that the National Socialists were the good guys in the 1920! It is strange how intellectuals blank out big chunks of events. These days we are free to surf the Internet and watch You Tube videos and the people in the past didn't have these tools. I am a fan of Koestler by the way, and I've watched a few Nazi documentaries on tv, but i always found it strange how intellectuals point out the evils of Bolshivism but can't see any good in the antithesis to it. I am not saying that National Socialism is better, but it is weird the way they paint the movement with demonic qualities.

But Leone Degrelle is a cooler head. He argues that it was the treaty of Versailles started all this mess. People moan how we carved up Africa like we carve up a pizza and this is why we owe Africa our guilt. Well the treaty of Versailles carved up the German lands like pizza. Erm, do we owe the Germans? This is also a similarity that the experts ignore. One man thought that Germany was owed some justice and that man was Adolf Hitler.

As an aside, we Brits are very passionate about the Falklands islands. So much so that the nation gets mad when our Island is threatened. shouldn't the Germans be mad at loosing huge chunks of their lands. You see, the Falklands is a rock compared to what happened to the Germanic lands after the war. Leone Degrelle writes all this up very well indeed.

Its a weird feeling when Degrelle writes 'Hitler told me', he actually knew the guy! Even when I'm reading about Adolf Hitler, I feel sick and guilty. I hide the book behind my other books so my friends don't see what I'm reading. Weird? Have we been condition somehow?

Anyway, here is sort of proof that, erm, Adolf Hitler was a moderate (no, seriously!)!

On page 71, Degrelle talks about Hitler's speech about the Jews and the notorious word 'Entfernung'. Degrelle writes that this word is translated as 'removal'. So Adolf Hitler wanted to remove the Jews. Degrelle goes on to explain that the word was translated into English as 'annihilation' and 'liquidation'. Those menacing words are used in millions of books, and documentaries, to argue that Hitler..... you get the picture.

So I got my Blackberry out and went on Google Translate. I typed the word 'Entfernung' into the box and searched for English translation.

The word 'removal' came up! This is the power of the internet folks!!!

Sick of the History Channel? Read this book.
By Charles Ellis
Finally! The real history of the NSDAP, Adolf Hitler, the Third Reich, the Waffen SS, and the heroic attempt to rid the world of communism.
Totally debunks the Hollywood version of WWII. Why in hell did the western "democracies" side with the soviet union?
Just think of all the people that would be alive today if we had helped the Germans defeat the communists. The russian people would have thrown off the communist yoke in 1941 instead of in 1991. There wouldn't have been an Iron Curtain and the eastern Europeans would never have been subjugated by the communist dictatorships for forty years. There wouldn't have been a communist China and 50 million Chinese wouldn't have been liquidated by the communists. There never would have been a Korean War. There never would have been a Vietnam War.
There never would have been a Pol Pot and 2 million cambodians wouldn't have been slaughtered by the communists. And millions upon millions of people around the world wouldn't have been murdered by communist "revolutionaries". Oh, and no Cold War!
Why? Why did our "leaders" trip over themselves to aid and abet the soviet communists, who had already murdered tens of millions of people long before anyone had ever heard of Adolf Hitler? I have asked that question for years.
Well, Leon Degrelle does a very good job of explaining why. This book is a real eye-opener.

Finally, an honest account
By Amazon Customer
This was a very pleasant surprise. Those of you who are familiar with the biography Adolf Hitler will find this refreshing. It contains some interesting facts and quotes that somebody like Degrelle would be privy to that to my understanding haven't been published before.

Degrelle is a very capable author, he was also one of Hitlers favourites, so much so that Hitler even said that if he had a son that he would be like Degrelle. Leon Degrelle was one of those dedicated soldiers that for his part in trying to preserve the NS cause, ended up being hounded and threatened after the war by some very unsavoury types. They took Degrelles children from him (that he later got back with great effort). These lowlifes that were enemies of the German people and were out to hunt down survivors of the German military and NS party.

This book is what is left of a large many volume series Degrelle was in the process of compiling about Adolf Hitler. A revisionist organization was hijacked by some criminally minded individuals that derailed the project. Many volumes were already in manuscript form with that organization (IHR) and have in all likelihood been destroyed, but Hitler Democrat was preserved.

Hitler Democrat tells about the early years of the struggling NSDAP and the turmoil that Hitler went through, battling a weak Weimar government with indifferent and selfish officials, rampant communism within Germany, a corrupted and degraded society (like Berlin of the 1920's), with out of control unemployment, an epidemic suicide rate, an unrealistic crippling debt caused by the Versaille treaty, an emasculated military, thieving French oppression, neighbours who were ramping up their own military while Germany was handcuffed by them and unfairly restricted (considering Germany didn't even start the war), German minorities in former German territories that were being mistreated and murdered even, for being German. And out of all this rises Hitler who in an incredible feat of will and common sense raises the Germany that was essentially one foot in the grave, to a world power, defying the WW1 Allies, the "Bank", and communism. It lines up very nicely with Richard Tedors Hitler Revolution which is also a very good account.

If you're an avid WW2 history buff, and are tired of the same old overly biased repetitive plagiarism of the mainstream historical record of allied propaganda, and prefer to read a more honest account written by a man who is a more than qualified witness, was loyal, a fiercely gutsy soldier, was trusted by Adolf, was a knowledgable and truthful man.

You will be very pleased with this book.

Clinical Trials - A Practical Guide to Design, Analysis, and Reporting, by Duolao Wang, Ameet Bakhai

Clinical trials form the backbone of evidence-based medicine, and appreciating clinical trial methods allows readers to critique, design and report clinical trials. This book is a friendly 'jargon buster' which aims to demystify the subject. It is divided into five sections: fundamentals of trial design, alternative trial designs, basics of statistical analysis, special trial issues in data analysis, and reporting of trials.

Using simple language, the book explains - with illustrations of numerous trial examples - the conceptual and methodological issues that occur at all stages of clinical trial covering trial design, conduct, analysis and reporting. The book is an educational and approachable reference in a difficult area of medicine where clinicians often feel uncertain and this material helps them review, appraise and publish trials and clinical evidence.

The audience for the book includes physicians, statisticians, pharmacists, medical students, clinical researchers, medical writers, data managers, study co-ordinators, pharmaceutical sales representatives, and financial (medical) analysts.

Fifty years of fun.
By Robin
It's nice to see a book of coffee-table proportions just devoted to cartoons, well why not? Previous Playboy books have covered the history of the magazine, the delightful Playmates and now the cartoons. The 450 plus illustrations are the work of 107 cartoonists and if you are a regular reader of the magazine you'll see your favorites. Gahan Wilson has the most (thirty-two) followed by regulars like Eldon Dedini, John Demsey, Alden Erikson, Kiraz, Roy Raymonde, Doug Sneyd (he of the flamboyant signature, which I was never able to decipher until now) Erich Sokol and between these, dozens of great artists who have maybe one or two works each. The humor might not be the wonderful ironic style of the New Yorker but it is amazing how many fresh takes can be created with the bachelor lifestyle.

This is a handsomely produced book, printed on thick glossy paper which, nicely, allows you to really appreciate just how good some of these artists are. My favorite, Jack Davis, unfortunately only has four shown, Richard Taylor has a super picture on page ten, an art gallery where he has created several Picasso type paintings, Doug Sneyd, Phil Interlandi and Dedini are all brilliant draughtsmen and Shel Silverstein can create so much with so little line and color.

However I was a bit disappointed with this book, as another reviewer has commented, there is no indication of when the cartoons appeared and I wish the publishers had gone the extra mile and perhaps devoted some space throughout the pages for a photo and biography of the regulars, some of these guys have been with Playboy for years. Someone though, at least, did have the foresight to compile an Artists index and a useful Order of appearance list, both of which are in the back pages.

Clearly a wonderful book for the bedside table if your date didn't turn up, try laughing yourself to sleep.

nice book, but...

First of all this book is printed on excellent paper & is well done except for one thing. there is no way to tell what year the cartoons are from. They should have had chapters. 1950`s 1960`s ect so you know what era they are from

This Is A Cool Book
By Dai-keag-ity
Fifty years worth of cartoons from Playboy. Doesn't that just set the mind reeling? Some of the biggest names in the business have their work showcased here in this history-making compendium. These cartoons are sometimes funny, often sardonic, frequently risqu, and one and all they once graced the pages of the world's favorite source of "illustrated" reading material. Perhaps the best way to regard this hefty collection (did you catch the pun?) is as a window to the changing mores of American society regarding not only women and sex, but what is and is not acceptable subject matter for a cartoon itself. When taken as a whole I find this material reflective of how much times have changed, and Playboy magazine with it. Very little to offend anyone here, just good clean fun and some real laughs too.

Come On In! Everyone Is Welcome! With a surge in fascination with Americana and a nostalgia for simpler times, a once vanishing treasure is finding its way back into the popular culture and back onto the roadsides of the country. Their names once tempted customers with a little magic to go along with a meal--the Miss Albany, the Mayfair, Webbies, the Night Owl. Now their warmth and great food draw us toward a grand dining adventure. Indeed, the American roadside diner is a place like no other, with excellent service, reasonable prices, and conversation as plentiful as the coffee. The story of the diner began more than 100 years ago when coffee and sandwiches were first served from the back of a horse-drawn lunch wagon in Providence, Rhode Island. Slowly these roadside treasures evolved into the stainless steel railroad cars that are now associated with diners. While their popularity declined in the 1960s as fast-food chains became popular, today they are gaining in-favor as more people want the personal touch present in a homey environment. The American Diner Cookbook contains more than 450 recipes for delicious foods that can be found on diner menus nationwide. Interviews with owners and others who have worked in diners and more than 100 black-and-white photographs appear throughout.

Blue Plate Special: The American Diner Cookbook: My Favorite Cookbook!
By TexasReader
I have a collection of over 200 cookbooks, and this one is, by far, my favorite. All of the most delicious meals made by family and friends are here. This book brings back fond memories of my mother's meals. No fancy recipes, just easy to prepare, down-home goodness on every page. I just gave two copies away as gifts to my daughter and a friend, and they love it too. This cookbook will not rest on a shelf. It is one that you will turn to often. Over 450 recipes from diners all over America. Just a few delicious dishes are: jelly surprise muffins, down south omelette, chicken noodle soup, egg salad sandwich, maple barbecue oven spareribs, cabbage rolls, chicken cacciatore, crab cakes, home-style cole slaw, scallops in cream sauce, milk shakes in every flavor: coffee, english toffee, orange cream, and more, and deserts: carrot cake, pineapple upside-down cake, mississippi mud cake, Libby's key lime pie, apple crisp, rice pudding, and peach cobbler. Yum!

Tons of fun!
By Steven Peterson
Tons of fun! This volume sings the praises of diner food--by providing some of the classic recipes. A bonus is brief descriptions of some diners, one of which I have actually eaten at (The Wellsboro Diner in Wellsboro, Pennsylvania; by the way, the food is good there!). There are also numerous photos of other diners, without discussion of these.

Many of these recipes are not overly healthy for one. But the recipes in here comprise an homage to diner food and, as such, provide a little residue of our culture. It is, simply, most enjoyable to relive the standard diner fare in this paperback book.

Here are some standards: corned beef hash and eggs (against my healthier instincts, I routinely order this at a local diner, "Kuppy's," in Middletown, PA) . Potatoes, butter, a small onion, corned beef (chopped), black pepper, and eggs. Put them all together? Yummy! Another standard breakfast dish--the Western omelette (I enjoy fixing omelette's for breakfast and lunch when I have a yen), with butter, onion, green bell pepper, cooked ham, eggs, milk, salt, pepper, and garlic salt.

Other dishes that sound enjoyable to me--chili supreme, sweet and sour cabbage, Philly cheesesteak sandwich, macaroni salad, chicken gumbo, asparagus with cream cheese, French toast, potato pancakes, a huge variety of hamburgers, Santa Fe chicken, corned beef and cabbage, and fish and chips. You want blue plate specials? They are here. Just so, dessert. . . .

Anyhow, this is a lot of fun. It's kind of neat to see the array of diner recipes laid out, page after page. I look forward to playing around with some of these recipes in the future.

Excellent starter book for "accidental DBAs"
By Jandroid
Even if I hadn't had the pleasure of meeting the inimitable Alison Balter in person recently, I would still highly recommend this book for people new to using SQL Server. SQL Server 2005 Explress is one of the most compact, accessible and easily configured versions to date (though MS continues to expand their offerings), making it quite accessible for even a laptop user if need be.

Alison does an excellent job of breaking down all the basic parts without pandering as other publishers can sometimes seem to do, efficiently guiding the user through the installation process, and beginning DB management techniques. MS Access users will be well acquainted with the Northwinds sample database included (in SQL Server version), maintaining a level of familiarity as you dip your toes in the new SQL Server Express 2005 waters.

By breaking the whole subject into one hour "topics" per chapter, the whole concept of administering SQL Server is much more digestible, without pandering. You can literally spend an hour a day and get through the book in basically a month (24 days) with a solid foundation to launch from. The language is clear, not overly-technical, yet precise. You will add things like T-SQL, triggers and stored procedures to your vocabulary before you know it.

A lot of SQL Server users are "accidental DBA's" as they inherit the job when a predecessor leaves and no one else is equipped or willing to take on the task. This is an excellent resource for both such unwitting DBA's, and aspiring MS Access developers seeking to upsize both their apps and their resumes. Highly recommend.

Don't bother looking at this book.
By Val
I would not recommend this book to anyone. It pontificates in a grandiose manner, assuming you'll be impressed by the big words even though they say nothing. If you are looking for a tutorial, this book does not walk you through the processes and sometimes even leads you astray without explaining or helping you through the errors. It doesn't even tell you when you're working in a different database or where to go to get that database so you can continue to follow along. It's not even useful as a reference book. It will tell you a command and if the command requires a code, it just says you need a code. When we did an internet search to find out more about the code, it was explained in one line. Would it have made the book too long to add one more sentence? As someone new to SQL, I found this book to be a complete waste of money and time.

I agree with all the poor ratings listed here - I had not read them before because I bought the book as part of a group at work where we would all be learning together. We are all programmers in other disciplines and most dropped out of the class because this book is so bad. It's funny how some of the good ratings here have to explain how you get around the problems so you can learn from the book - DOES THAT TELL YOU SOMETHING???

Diappointing Text

I have had great experiences with Sams books in the past, but this book is an exception. This book struggled to find an identity from the very beginning.

First off there were numerous mistakes throughtout the book. Some were minor like telling the audience to click modify when it should have actually been design. Others are not so minor. In one chapter the author unexpectidly switches to a different database for her examples. This would have been fine, except the author never tells the audience where to find the database or even mentions that she has switched databases (the database is available on Microsoft's website, but this is never mentioned).

The other main gripe I had with this book is the lack of details in important areas. The author would sometimes only devote a paragraph to something very important. Othertimes, the author would spend 15 pages explaining something that could have been done in 3.

A very poor book overall.
