Very Mediocre

Don't use if you want a mathematical treatment of game theory. Osborne assumes almost no knowledge of math. His explanations are pretty verbose and convoluted. Maybe it would be more useful for undergrads that don't know much math, though I can't imagine grad students finding this text very useful.
There is a partial solution manual available online, but it contains the solutions to mostly the easier questions, and the more difficult exercises do not have solutions. I'd imagine this would be difficult to use for self-study.

Excellent! A true introduction

This book manages to teach game theory in depth while avoiding any mathematics beyond rudimentary calculus and set theory. It was used as the basis for an undergraduate course that I took, and none of the texts I've used as a graduate student can compare in terms of clarity. This is a book that takes its time, letting ideas sink in rather than abandoning students who don't grasp new concepts right away. The problems given are interesting, and many have clearly-written solutions available online.

If you are looking for a more advanced text, then Ken Binmore's recent Playing for Real stands out above the crowd.

A Useful Book, However...

I bought this book as a required coursebook for a class on game theory. At first, I hated this book. There are no solutions to the exercises contained within the book, as another reviewer has noted. If you want to self-teach, you may struggle. However, after performing due diligence, I found that there exists online a pdf of solutions to most exercises within the book, available for free.

I can not speak for whether this book is best in comparison to others, because I have not read others, nor would I have the in-depth knowledge to compare, as this is not my field.

What I can tell you is that I have learned a lot from this book, but only once I found the self-published solutions manual from the author, available here:

Yet, despite recognising the importance of SSM, students and practitioners still experience considerable difficulty with the intellectual process involved.

Based on a lifetime experience as an academic and consultant, Brian Wilson provides guidance on how to develop a range of conceptual models across a variety of business problems. Building on his earlier work in Systems: Concepts, Methodologies and Applications he takes a practical approach to the topic based on the premise that all organisations are unique. He develops concepts to articulate ways of thinking about complexity. These are an alternative to mathematically-based concepts, and they offer rigorous, and defensible ways of answering the question 'What do we take the organisation to be?' A model of the most appropriate and relevant concept for your own organisation can then be successfully developed and applied.

Of relevance to organisations of any type, or any size, this book shows how model building within SSM can be used to cope with real-life problems. It will be an invaluable resource for students and practitioners in both the public and private sectors.

About the Author
BRIAN WILSON has a background in nuclear power engineering and control system design. In 1966 he became a founding member of the Department of Systems Engineering at the University of Lancaster, where he pursued the application of control principles to management problem solving.

There he was involved in the development and use of Human Activity Systems and 'verbs in the imperative' in place of mathematics as the modelling language for the intellectual processes involved and maintained particular interest in the application of SSM to information and organisation-based analysis. This research was published in Systems: Concepts, methodologies and Applications by John Wiley Sons.

In 1992 he founded his own consulting company, Brian Wilson Associates, where he continues to develop and apply his unique brand of Soft Systems Methodology.

Well written and informative introduction to SSM

Soft Systems Methodology (SSM) is an offshoot of systems thinking and has its roots in Peter Checkland's seminal 1981 book, "Systems Thinking, Systems Practice" (now out of print). This book shows how to apply SSM to the problem sets for which it was designed: the unpredictable behavior of human actions, which are often counter to the logic we apply to "hard" problems such as computer systems behavior and other systems that follow predictable laws of physics.
As a consultant who aligns information systems to business processes this book provided me with a streamlined approach to dealing with the human factor, especially organizational politics and resistance to change - both of which I routinely deal with. The approach is reasonably straightforward, and involves the following steps:
- Frame the problem and surrounding situation
- Use 'rich pictures' portray the situation. A 'rich picture' is an informal rendering, and should capture issues and thinking, systems and interactions.
- Develop a root definitions and perspectives from which to view the situation (Clients, Actors, Transformations, World-view and Environment). A 'root definition' is a process that transforms an input into an output - a typical process flow.
- Build a conceptual model of what the system to remedy the problem or situation needs to accomplish. The basis of the conceptual model is human activity.
- Compare the model to the ideal, examine alternatives and select the best option.
- Design and implement the system or solution.
The approach taken by the author is to provide the knowledge needed to employ SSM in a sequence of chapters that lead you through models and methodology, the principles of human activity modeling, system selection, business process reengineering issues, the consensus primary task model, the relationships to training and HR, and generic model building.
Consensus primary task model (CPTM) is a key element of the approach in this book and is crucial to successfully employing SSM, which, after all, is designed to deal with the ambiguities of people. The CPTM is an aggregation of the conceptual models, which results in a 'strawman' model that is used to build consensus. From this evolves into the agreed upon model and approach.
The key differences between the usual 'committee' approach and SSM are the structure and framework, ensuring that viewpoints are systematically examined, and the emphasis on consensus instead of compromise. While the book makes SSM appear to be easy, which is a function of the author's clear writing, employing it in the real world requires training and discipline. It's especially well suited to organizational change management projects as well as strategic planning.

Grade 5-8-Through the words and memories of Jack Mandelbaum, Warren presents a harrowing account of a Jewish boy's experience in Nazi prison camps. Mandelbaum had lived a comfortable life with his family in Gdynia, Poland, until the German invasion forced them to flee to a relative's village in 1939. Later, when the Jews were sent to concentration camps, the 12-year-old became separated from the rest of his family and wound up in the Blechhammer camp. By describing events through the boy's voice, the author does an excellent job of letting his words carry the power of the story. She avoids historical analysis, sticking to Mandelbaum's experiences, and brings readers into the nightmarish world of the concentration camp with a strong feeling of immediacy. As with many stories of great suffering, some of the minor details, such as risking death to steal a jar of marmalade, deliver the most impact. Besides the physical hardship, Warren conveys how frustrating and confusing it was for a child in such an environment. Once liberated, the young man learned the sad fate of his family and as he ironically observed, had he known his parents and siblings would not survive, he might not have struggled so hard to live himself. Black-and-white contemporary photographs illustrate the book. This story works as an introduction to the Holocaust and will also interest readers of Lila Perl's Four Perfect Pebbles (Greenwillow, 1996), Anne Frank's diary, and other works on the period.

Warren, who never knew any Jews when she was growing up in a small Nebraska town, brings both passion and the distance of the outsider to the story. True to Mandelbaum's youthful viewpoint, she lets the story unfold slowly so readers don't know until the end what happened to Jack's mother and brother after they were separated, or whether his friends survived. The combination of Mandelbaum's experience and Warren's reporting of the whole picture makes this an excellent introduction for readers who don't know much about the history. There's only one false note. Unlike Anita Lobel's No Pretty Pictures (1998) and many other personal accounts, there's a radiant innocence here: everything "before" was blissful ("It was a lovely life"), and, even in the camps, Jack never has an ugly thought. The design is open and inviting with clear type, many photos, and an excellent multimedia bibliography. Hazel Rochman

wonderful and disturbing book

It's very hard for me to read anything about the Holocaust but I needed to make sure this book was appropriate for my young daughter. I try to keep her protected from the worlds horrors as much as possible since she's only 10 but she wanted to read this book. It is entirely appropriate for her age and I'm glad she'll know about the atrocities that happened so long ago and I hope as she grows up she'll fight for human rights.

After over 200 undergraduate and 50 graduate school hours, this is officially the most poorly organized, poorly written text

As a life-long student who's taken about 200 undergraduate and 50 graduate school hours, I can honestly say this is one of the most poorly written texts that I've ever read. It is essentially the common core of nursing pharmacology. Rather than do what makes sense by organizing information in a fashion conducive to learning, the information is organized for inefficient learning. Everything is broken down by ADPIE/Nursing process, in an effort to be more nursey-academicy, rather than to provide a product useful to students. Rather than having information about a medication in one location in a chapter, it is spread all over the place. Instead of going to one or two pages to make a notecard, you may have to go to 13 different pages and manually (in a time-exhaustive fashion) search for the medication name or class being casually mentioned. If you are in a school that has easy exams, this is not a big deal. If you are in a school where that one sentence mentioned casually (under the description of a different medication, of all places - why is there information on medication X under Medication Y, which is not listed under Medication X?) on page 327, 18 pages away from the pages that predominantly talk about the medication in question, then it is a big deal. The book contradicts itself constantly, and lists different information in one section than another. For example, it may list certain characteristics in one area, but in the 6 other areas, the characteristics contradict, replace, or add. List everything in one area! You're producing a product for consumers, and you're not doing them a service by providing one of the most inefficient text books ever written. Get rid of the nursing common core ridiculousness, and actually write your text in a concise, well-organized fashion instead of being a nursing lemming who contributes to.. whatever this thing is that's occurring in nursing schools. I'm not sure what that thing is called, but it's not called, "conducive to learning efficiently."

So most nursing school textbooks are huge and have a bunch of pointless info in them. This book DOES have pointless info that you'll never use but for the most part, it's straight to the point, easy to read and hones in on the things you should pay close attention to.

Hunting Season

Hunting Season is a big ol’ mess! In a good way! Aurora just cannot catch a break! Finding out you’re a vampire, having your best friend get kidnapped, and trying to make up with your ex all while hunting evil vampires and trying to take down the agency who stole your life can be exhausting! Seriously. Poor Aurora. But it does make for great reading! Everything that can go wrong, does go wrong as Aurora tries to rescue Dante. Plans keep getting interrupted, and then ruining possible escape plans! Crazy redheads commit vandalism while you’re having a hot make out session! So much happens!

I really enjoyed Hunting Season. It just may be my favorite of the series so far! Really, any book that opens with some getting punched in the face is probably going to get me excited! Aurora may not like violence, but she knows how to dole it out when necessary. And she is willing to do anything to get Dante back. Not just because he’s her best friend and partner, but because she needs to be honest about her feelings for him. Or lack thereof. This upset me so much! I love Dante! I wanted him and Aurora (and Fane!) together! But I totally get that she loves him as a friend, but she didn’t let her feelings for Fane get in the way of the rescue either. There will be a time for romance later! I hope!

Now that my love for Dante is out of the way, I’ll talk about the nonstop plot of Hunting Season. Like I said before, everything goes wrong! Aurora and Company have good plans in place, but something always messes them up! Then some aspect of their plan conflicts with possible back up plans or escape plans, and I was just so nervous for them all the time! Why can’t something go smoothly!? Although one screwed up plan did allow us to get to know Fane a lot better. His past is very interesting, and I’d actually love a novella about his early time as a vampire!

Hunting Season was pretty great. Something is always happening! Plot points actually move forward even though there are a lot of setbacks. We get to learn more about each of the characters, which I always appreciate. And there’s no cliffhanger! Well, the ending isn’t nice and neat, since stuff still needs to get done, but for the most part it ends on a relatively calm note. Now to wait for more!

I love this whole series and this entry doesn't disappoint

I love this whole series and this entry doesn't disappoint. It opens with a bang and runs at a pretty breakneck pace throughout. Good news for Fane lovers, he makes much more of an appearance in this book than he did in the last one. Without giving too much away, the series is advanced in a satisfactory manner and more answers to Aurora, Noel, Dante, and Valerie's situation are given. We're also given more backstory about Jared, Melcher, Fane, and Gabrielle.

Given that we're left with a cliffhanger of sorts, I can't wait until the next book comes out.

Aurora Sky continues to meet adversity with courage and resilience in this installment while she works with Noel and Fane to rescue Dante. I find myself liking Fane more and more. Jefford has a high quality writing style that includes well-developed characters, intricate plot development that flows all the way to the end, and realistic settings. She closes the book leaving the reader reeling for more.

The Threat Is Real and It Is Now

Perry Stone, like many current TV evangelical preachers, are attempting to awaken the sleeping church to the dangerous rise of the Islamic threat to the world, in particular the United States. He unerringly points out the methods being employed by Islamic leaders and spokesmen to overthrow and eventually subjugate nations and peoples who are willfully ignorant of their satanic devices and strategies.

After spending the first portion of his book on a review of prior kingdoms that have impacted world history, Perry Stone concentrates the major remaining section on a study of Islamic thinking and aspirations, namely, propaganda, infiltration, intimidation, killings, and world domination. Additionally, he specifically enumerates the approaches now being taken to implement the Islamic master plan. Establishing mosques in every major city, establishing full-time Islamic schools to raise leaders, making criticism against Islam a hate crime, buying out media outlets, papers, and companies, making inroads into the black communities(often more accepting of Islam), Engaging in debates to legitimize Islam's equality to Christianity and Judaism, holding America hostage with high oil prices, and encouraging Islamic families to further reproduce in order to gain numerical superiority are but a few of the techniques presently being utilized or will be fully exploited in the future.

Have read most of Perry Stone's books and needless to say wasn't disappointed in this one. He certainly did his homework and makes it so interesting to read. I recommend it to all interested in knowing more of the End Times.

Who has ears to hear better read this book

This book explained very clear about ISIS and what is there mission in the world. Who has ears to hear better read this book! As with all Perry Stone books he is very well informed and make you as a reader really think and understand the works of the Bible. Very good book for believer and non-believer alike. Forget the "extraterrestrial" or "evolution", read the prophecies of Perry Stone.

About the Author
The author has been teaching undergraduate and graduate level thermodynamics courses for over 30 years. Since 1989 he has been a professor at the Middle East Technical University (METU), Ankara, Turkey. He has also taught at the Turkish Military Academy and the University of Akron, Ohio. Professor Tosun received his BS and MS degrees from METU, and a PhD degree from the University of Akron, all in chemical engineering. He is the author of the book Modeling in Transport Phenomena, 2nd Ed., published by Elsevier. His research interests include mathematical modeling and transport phenomena. He is the author or co-author of over sixty publications.

Solid, basic text

I adopted this book as a textbook for my course in global trade and marketing. It was the ONLY book I found that actually covered the subject I wanted to teach and did so at a level that would engage my (MBA) students. In using it, I find that I chose well. Students report finding it useful and on target.

The only negatives lie in the book's first chapter. It seems that its authors wanted to place the text in the universe and attempted to use its first chapter to do so. Had I read only the first chapter, I would not have selected the book for my class. Fortunately, though, later chapters read well and have good topical focus.

Be aware that a "gray market" edition is circulating. Although marked for distribution only in the Indian Subcontinent, its content appears to be similar, if not identical, to the one coming from Pearson out of the UK. It lacks color, and its printing lacks good finish, but its content seems to be identical. I randomly checked pages, and all that I checked were the same between the two books. The gray market edition is substantially cheaper!
