Trish, Just Trish (This Can't Be Happening Book 2), by Lynda LeeAnne

Author’s warning: Including, but not limited to: a deep, dark childhood, lots and lots of cussing (as in, A LOT), a ton of fighting, maybe hair pulling, a bitch with a vulnerable side, and last, but not least, ber possessive, over obsessive, crazy hot alpha males on the verge of needing therapy… and maybe a tear or two.

Patricia Grace Kincaid is haunted by her past and no matter what she does, the ghosts won’t stay away. A childhood incident nearly ruined her life. A mistake that she made two years ago ripped her to shreds. She isn’t the same feisty, fearless bitch she used to be… or is she?

What will happen when the person she screwed over storms back into her life? She freaks. Is it for the reason she’s always hoped for… that Tony Lopez, the breathtakingly sexy Latino love of her life, has finally decided to forgive her? Hell no. Will he demand her complete submission? Yes. Will he make her life hell? Double yes. Will she, in return, torture him? Hell-to-the-yes. Will her past come back to haunt her? Absolutely.

I do not like Tony!
By Michelle P
*(warning-I'm mad at Tony!)* and some *spoilers*!!!

5 stars for writing- you get swept away and captivated the whole time your reading!!
5 stars for the series and characters-you will fall in love with these people!
3.5-4 stars for Trish, just Trish- because I'm mad and dont like Tony!

Tony was an A**HOLE!!! He treated Trish like crap!! Talked to her so horribly. Now I don't know about you, but I wouldn't have stayed for that s***!!! But SHE did!!!!! She basically let him continue to do it allllll the way to the end of the book!!! I know she felt guilty for hurting him over the fake cheating pictures from Lexi's story, but my god she had no back bone. None. Except of course when she tried to beat the hell outta Destiny :D Now, I did LOVE that scene!!! But there were soooo many times when I wanted her to pack up her stuff and leave already! Between his manwhoring, the Girlfriend BJ (lol) from the beginning, , him calling her a whore at the beginning of the story, I mean I could go on and on with the awful things he did and said to her. I felt so bad for her! When she asked him if he loved her and he said he "cared", she held herself with some pride and dignity I guess and said she understood! But I wanted to scream "LEAVE NOW YOU DUMMY! WHERE IS YOUR PRIDE!?" because the poor girl apologized and explained over and over!!!

I cried When Trish got kidnapped and Lex went to Tony's house and told him about what happened to Trish when she was 9 yrs old and that she had been a virgin until him. And I'm glad it gutted him. He deserved it!!! I'm glad he was so distraught over her that he threw up. It was hard for me to feel sorry for him. I disliked him that much and by the time he got his head outta his ass it was too late for me to like him. I can handle all the jealousy, the bossy alpha male stuff about him, but he broke her so many times I just couldn't forgive him. And for me, he didn't grovel or suffer enough for her to have forgiven him finally. I do love Trish's character, I felt for her and felt connected to her which is probably why I'm so pissed at Tony for her. The last 21-22 % of this book is so emotional. I got teary eyed through so much of the last part of it. Very well written.

I have to add that I was thrilled that Lexi and Lan were in the story. Loved that!

I LOVED Lexi, Baby!!!!!! I LOVE Lynda LeeAnne's writing!!!!! I LOVE ALL the characters from this series, except for Tony lol and I WILL read and can not wait to read Adam's book!

*********I re-read the last 20% of the book tonight, (I read this book in one setting earlier today) and after reading, I may not be as mad at Tony anymore. Because even tho he can still be a HUGE a**hole, I know he loves Trish. He just better treat her like the damn fine woman she is lol from now on. ;) and ok, maybe now that I'm not so mad, he did suffer a lot, and I'll admit he showed her a lot of remorse and love and I'm glad for HER lol she loved him and he did come through for her in the end. I hope I sound nicer now lol *************

HAVE SOME MERCY!!!!!
By 1book-addict
Arms in the air, waving side to side, while my hips move with the rhythm!
Yea, that is my happy dance because this book was FAN-TABULOUS!!!!!!!!!!!

Lord have mercy the tension between Tony and Trish had me fanning myself. Have mercy those two had me going all kinds of crazy. My inner minion was telling me, yea you are a little crazy, but its okay because everyone is, right?

I am sure if you read this you are gonna be all kinds of crazy too. It's a emotional rollercoaster. I mean at one time I was hot, in need of a cold shower, then I was in need of some ice cream to heal my broken heart.

I mean I was beginning to love and HATE Tony at the same time, then he done things that made me really hate him and I wanted Trish to not be so pathetic and leave his sorry a**.

Trish was my hero, she was so brave and hard core but Tony could tear her down and I hated to see her so broken, without any fight left in her lil feisty body and after finding out what happened to her at the age of 9 , and the hurtful awful things that Tony spat from his vile mouth, well then I wanted to hug Trish and ball like a baby!

Yea so I was happy, I cried, I screamed, I did a happy dance, I wanted to climb through this iPad and kick Tony in the ball sack and watch him squirm!!

But there were times that good ol Trish brought out that fighting spirit that had me rooting her on, especially when she told BJ( hahaha) just how Tony liked it, I busting up. I laughed so hard I had happy tears.

And when Destiny showed up, the claws were out and Trish was about to rip her apart if Tony had not intervened and that had me, jumping up and down, rooting her own!

I can only say this book was AWESOME!!!!!!

Lynda LeAnne is pure genius.

~ happy reading~

Tony has no redeeming qualities
By Kindle Customer
This is just my opinion and you may feel I'm totally off base which is perfectly okay. I absolutely could not stand either character. Trish was weak. Really, really weak. NEVER would I let a man talk to me and treat me the way she let Tony treat her. Tony was a total Neanderthal. I cannot stress enough how disgusting I found Tony. He was emotionally abusive and she just took it and told him she loved him. We didn't even get a back story on Tony that may have given us insight as to why he was borderline psychotic and possessive. Possibly even have made it all somewhat justifiable. Ugh...had to force myself to finish this one.

The supporting characters were decent. I would like to see more from Shane and Shannon but hope Tony and Trish disappear.

I'm giving this book 1.5 stars because I had enjoyed Lexi Baby and wouldn't mind seeing Shane and Shannon get their story told as mentioned above. I also feel obligated to mention this book was riddled with editing issues. That normally isn't something that bothers me to much but when your already not enjoying the book they seem to jump out at you more!

Marianne had no idea that the little bauble she found inside an ancient Egyptian obelisk was anything more than a simple piece of jewelry. Moments after donning it, she realized it was far more than that; the ankh grants her the magical ability to control the size of any man’s cock! By simply making eye contact with the opposite sex, she can cause his manhood to grow to eye-popping proportions - or to dwindle down to pathetically small size.

Needless to say, Marianne has little to fear from any man now; she can make his most secret wish come true, or she can make his worst nightmare a reality. It’s just her luck that she gained this ability in the middle of an otherwise fairly boring date - but that’s about to change for them both. She takes charge of both the situation and her date, Matt, by making his cock grow to an epic size - but if he doesn’t pleasure her, she threatens to make him smaller than ever before! What’s Matt to do?

In Chapter Two, Marianne meets Aaron - an Army engineer who’s big and impressive in all places but one. Fortunately, that’s something Marianne can help him with, but there’s a condition - she has to be the first one to experience his new endowment. Join her as she and Aaron have the night of their lives - and Marianne accidentally overuses her special power. Aaron will gain a truly legendary tool, bigger than she even thought possible!

Bigger is an erotic short story in approximately 10,000 words across two chapters, and features two special M/F scenes mixed with magical ‘male enhancement’. This story is intended for adults only and is not suitable for readers under the age of eighteen. A Wealth of Information About Exit Planning
By David Franzetta
Kerri Salls' new book, Harvest Your Wealth, is a clarion call for owners of small and medium sized privately held businesses. It might have been titled; "Don't Leave Your Money on the Table When You Sell Your Business!" The author clearly knows her stuff. The book is chock full of lists: things to do, things to avoid, things to think about. Reading the book, I felt like I could have used a "List of the Lists" to help me navigate through the content, because there are so many useful lists of tips and techniques for the exit planner-I counted more than 75 different lists in the 235-page volume.
The book has lots of very useful material, and I can imagine business owners dog-earing pages and writing lots of notes in the margins. I found the organizational design to be a bit vague, but that's a trifling complaint when balanced against the wealth of valuable information that is made available to the reader.
If you are thinking about exiting your business, this is a book that you'll want to add to your business library.

From Publishers Weekly
This full-color manga adaptation of Miyasaki's Academy Award-winning animated film stands on its own as an exceptional work of comics art. Chihiro, a 10-year-old-girl, is being taken by her parents to their new suburban neighborhood. They take a wrong turn off the highway, discover what looks to be an abandoned theme park and decide to explore it. Her parents smell food cooking and take off looking for something to eat, and that's where their troubles begin. Chihiro finds them gobbling up food in an deserted restaurant, turned into pigs, and she realizes they are trapped in a magical place of ghosts, spirits and demons. Chihiro is discovered by Haku, a boy with magical powers, who promises to help rescue her parents and find a way back to the real world. But first, he sends Chihiro to get a job at Abura-ya, a mystical bathhouse for the spirits run by a witch. At Abura-ya, readers meet a strange crew of workers and the colorful spirit forms who come there to rest. The classic tale also introduces a six-armed man who runs the boiler room; a woman laborer who befriends Chihiro; and many fantastic creatures. This five-volume "film comic" was meticulously created by scanning 35mm prints of the animated film and then ingeniously recomposing them into comics panels. The book's luxuriant illustrations seem even more saturated with color, detail and atmosphere than the film. It's a beautiful and engaging fantasy aimed at kids but likely to charm readers of any age.

The Sister and the Golden Seal
By Marc Ruby™
Now that we are past the middle of this story (this is volume for of 5) the action picks up quite a bit. No Face, the spirit that young Sen let in earlier has turned into a disaster, determined to eat whatever food the bath house has to offer and paying in showers of gold. On the down side, however, the spirit has a tough time differentiating staff from the food, throwing everything into chaos.
As this is going on, Sen sees a white dragon being chased across the sky by paper birds. This is Haku, the young mage, who is badly wounded in his efforts to steal magic. Surprisingly, Sen shows fierce loyalty to her friend, courageously facing the dangers of the bathhouse in order to save his life. The girl has come a long way from the spoiled child who first happened into this strange work.
When I first found this series, the film was still unavailable to US audiences. As such they were the only option for English speakers who wanted to see Miyazaki's latest work and get a sense of the flow of the film. They do this quite well for what is essentially a still medium, spending a lot of frames building a chain of movement. This is done with cels from the film, so the normal comic approach doesn't prevail. When I look at the illustration, I think of a parent reading a book to a child and pointing to a string of pictures as, say, a dragon twists and loops in the sky.
Indeed, this set is perfect for that purpose. It is also a delightful memento of a wonderful film. Miyazaki's imagination is always stunning and unique. There are many good anime artists, but fewer great artists who happen to do anime. Film or no film, I intend to own the entire set.

"If you forget it, you'll never find your way home"
By Marc Ruby™
Imagine being a typical, slightly self-centered 10-year-old girl, and suddenly finding yourself the only human employee at the Abura Ya, a bathhouse for the spirits. Your parents have turned into pigs, and if you cannot find a way, they will eventually become snacks for customers of the resort. Your employer is a giant old woman named Yubaba, who drives a hard bargain and intends to make you work every moment.
This is Chihiro Ogino's lot in the manga version of Hayao Miyazaki's 'Spirited Away.' Certainly a tough role for an adult to deal with, one cannot help but admire Chihiro (now called Sen) for her fierce determination. In the world of Abura Ya she manages to find friends like Haku, a teenage boy with magical powers, and Lin, the co-worker who looks after Chihiro and helps her snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.
In this third volume Chihiro starts her job as a bath attendant, performing the backbreaking labor of scrubbing floors and baths and waiting on customers. When an awesome stink spirit shows up for a wash, no one wants to go near it. Naturally, Chihiro gets stuck with the job. What ensues is a surprise for all as Chihiro discovers that she has strange friends in even stranger places.
Some notes. These beautifully colored manga are done in Japanese order [right to left, top to bottom]. At first, this is a bit confusing, but after a while, it gets to be fun. In addition, it preserves the effect of the original manga page layouts, which really is the best way to present them. Japanese sound effects are left as is, but a translation guide is included.

"Aren't you even going to knock?"
By Marc Ruby™
Having little or no will power, I have succumbed to the temptation to pick up more of these little specialty manga created from the cells of Hayao Miyazaki's latest anime creation, 'Spirited Away.' This film has been a runaway bestseller in Japan, and is due for release in the US shortly. When I bought the first volume as a novelty, my greatest concern was that the books would 'spoil' the plot. However, after reading two volumes, I find I'm even more interested in seeing the film, which looks every bit as remarkable as 'Princess Mononoke,' another Miyazaki hit.
These are the story of Chihiro Ogino, a young girl whose parents have inadvertently wandered into a bathhouse for spirits and been turned into pigs. Chihiro is determined to rescue them and discovers that she must find a job in the bathhouse or suffer the same fate of her parents. This volume is the story of her quest for employment, starting with the spider-like Kamaji who runs the hot water system to the giant Yubaba who is the matron of the resort. One has to admire Chihiro's determination, even though she is actually a bit irritating in a little girl way. Of course, I might be a bit self-centered and panicky if I found myself in the comic version of Motel Hell.
The styling is classic Miyazaki, with great work on the expressions of both the human and non-human characters. These last come in every shape and type imaginable. The dialog is minimalist. Often, the plot is moved forward by the visual story, full of both menace and sight gags. Another thing I like is, since the sound effects are in Japanese, someone has gone to the immense trouble of providing a frame-by-frame translation of them. Just the thing for an adult who wants to read these aloud to a child.
One warning. These manga done in Japanese order [right to left, top to bottom]. At first, this is a bit confusing, but after a while, it gets to be fun. In addition, it preserves the effect of the original manga page layouts, which really is the best way to present them. If these manga aren't over-distributed, then they may very well be eminently collectable.

Interview with Alan Hollinghurst
Alan Hollinghurst's extraordinarily rich novel The Line of Beauty. has garnered a new level of acclaim for the author after winning the 2004 Man Booker Prize. Hollinghurst speaks about his work in our interview.

From Publishers Weekly
Among its other wonders, this almost perfectly written novel, recently longlisted for the Man Booker, delineates what's arguably the most coruscating portrait of a plutocracy since Goya painted the Spanish Bourbons. To shade in the nuances of class, Hollingsworth uses plot the way it was meant to be used—not as a line of utility, but as a thematically connected sequence of events that creates its own mini-value system and symbols. The book is divided into three sections, dated 1983, 1986 and 1987. The protagonist, Nick Guest, is a James scholar in the making and a tripper in the fast gay culture of the time. The first section shows Nick moving into the Notting Hill mansion of Gerald Fedden, one of Thatcher's Tory MPs, at the request of the minister's son, Toby, Nick's all-too-straight Oxford crush. Nick becomes Toby's sister Catherine's confidante, securing his place in the house, and loses his virginity spectacularly to Leo, a black council worker. The next section jumps the reader ahead to a more sophisticated Nick. Leo has dropped out of the picture; cocaine, three-ways and another Oxford alum, the sinisterly alluring, wealthy Lebanese Wani Ouradi, have taken his place. Nick is dimly aware of running too many risks with Wani, and becomes accidentally aware that Gerald is running a few, too. Disaster comes in 1987, with a media scandal that engulfs Gerald and then entangles Nick. While Hollinghurst's story has the true feel of Jamesian drama, it is the authorial intelligence illuminating otherwise trivial pieces of story business so as to make them seem alive and mysteriously significant that gives the most pleasure. This is Nick coming home for the first and only time with the closeted Leo: "there were two front doors set side by side in the shallow recess of the porch. Leo applied himself to the right hand one, and it was one of those locks that require tender probings and tuggings, infinitesimal withdrawals, to get the key to turn." This novel has the air of a classic.

From The New Yorker
"She is either Muse or she is nothing," Robert Graves wrote. After the Renaissance, the Greek goddesses of artistic inspiration were replaced by real—if idealized—women (think Dante and Beatrice). In these well-researched essays, Prose examines the lives of nine women who inspired some of history's most prominent artists and writers, including Samuel Johnson, Man Ray, and John Lennon. Nearly all these muse-artist relationships were distinguished by tragedy, and only five were sexually consummated; as Prose notes, "The power of longing is more durable than the thrill of possession." What emerges by the end of the book, oddly, is a case for the singularity of artistic influence: the author shows that Lewis Carroll's attachment to Alice Liddell was not at all like Nietzsche's sense of intellectual kinship with Lou Andreas-Salom, nor was Yoko Ono's involvement with John Lennon as fruitful as Suzanne Farrell's with George Balanchine. The strongest essays here, on Liddell, Farrell, Ono, and Lee Miller (a Vogue model and photographer who posed for and worked with Man Ray), pointedly refute the notion that the role of the muse is a passive one, and offer in its place a complicated vision of the necessary contradictions of artistic life—including the desire for both feverish devotion and artistic independence, and a sense of the truth of beauty and the transience of it. Prose's broader conclusions about culture can seem hasty, but the book's achievement is its quiet revaluation of the received notion that genius is solitary in nature.

people are beautiful because we love them, not the reverse
By pjf
SPOILER ALERT

Middle-class but upwardly hopeful Nick Guest comes to Tory MP Gerald Fedden's house first as a vacation houseminder, and ostensible watcher of the unstable daughter Catherine (Cat). Nick is in pursuit of beauty of a certain type. Beauty is in many things, but Nick is enthralled by beauty as manifested in privileged lives and its beautiful things.

Invited to stay after the vacation as a useful dogsbody, he gets to be the hanger on of wealth, and dabbler in their society. Always obsequious, he becomes a foil for family head and MP Gerald's boasting, a constant reassurance and dutiful quasi-son to the mother Rachel (he's much more sympathetic to her than to his own mother, who he is vaguely ashamed of) and a companion and minder to the manic-depressive Cat.

Nick's biggest problem, as a character, is that he is such a sycophantic bluenose. With his labor friends, he reviles Thatcher, and comments negatively on Gerald. To Gerald and his friends and relations, he acts the supportive, respectful Tory. This chameleon-like character makes him hard to respect.

Supposedly working on getting an advance degree on Henry James at UCL in London, he seems more in pursuit of love. But after dabbling in a relationship with middle class clerk - who it is foreshadowed will dump him because he has no money -- he becomes a kept boy for a rich Lebanese millionaire, and former Oxford classmate Wani Ouradi. Nick's finances are tied to his tentative relationship with Ouradi; his living and personal situation tied to his relationship with the Feddens. While other rich companions from his graduate class are starting lives, making names and fortunes, middle-class Nick's can't leave the mein of his college companions but can't afford it himself, (he was a scholarship student at Oxford) so remains stuck in sycophantic roles to stay in that social set.

Nick was enthralled with Henry James, but the real line of beauty is more enthralling than its fictional dissection. Instead Nick helps start up Wani's magazine/film company OGEE (named after the line of beauty arch). But Wani is something of a dilettante, more interested in cocaine, porn and sex. Nick's job is something of a pose. Wani goes through a lot of cocaine, a lot of rent boys, a lot of sex with Nick. He gives Nick a salary and car, while they do tacit work on the magazine and a film script. But Wani openly reviles Nick as just another one of the many paid sluts who takes his money. Nick basically is a respectable looking, safe, but hidden sexual companion, no more acknowledged than the anonymous rent boys.

Nick constantly professes love to his lovers and adopted family. But none take Him seriously as if sensing his shallowness. Indeed, often the sentence after Nick professes love to someone, he wonders at himself for doing so. Whatever these relationships are, they aren't love. His first "lover", it is hinted at, trades Nick up for someone with more funds, before Nick snags Wani, wanting to love him for his physical beauty, even knowing Wani's faults. There's convenience, and a bit of regard, but no real tie.

Similarly, Nick tells Catherine that he loves her family, but he's there for a job as well as a minder to Catherine, a general dogsbody, and an impressionable and appreciative mirror reflecting their wealth. Because Nick loves the Fedden's privileged life, he gives it more brilliance, a reflective glow. Therein lies his real usefulness. Oxford educated and a quasi Don, he offers a tacit legitimacy in his otherwise middle class admiration that someone else wouldn't be able to offer (even perhaps get in the door). Gerald shows off to him, and uses him as a verification of their own wealth and privilege. Nick's basically just a different kind of slut for the Feddens.

Meant to be a sort of touchstone, Catherine reviles pretense, babbles of speaking truths. She's angry that Nick doesn't leave Wani because their relationship must be kept hidden. When he tells her he stays with Wani because he finds him so physically beautiful -- she tells him that people shouldn't be loved because they are beautiful. That people are beautiful because we love them.

Nick only usefulness requires being a convenient reflective foil for beauty, but that means keeping ugliness hidden -- Gerald's indiscretions, Wani destructive lifestyle, etc. When Catherine, in a manic phase, blurts out some of these truths to the press, Nick's only usefulness then is as a sort of scapegoat. Wani, now dying of AIDS, pays Nick off in his will, but never speaks of love. And Nick discovers there was never any love in these relationships, nor any beauty. But has he learned his shallow quest was in vain?

The story ends in ambiguity. Both Nick's lovers succumb to AIDS. We don't know if Nick is HIV positive. In the film, the impression is left that he has been lucky in that, even as he still searches, clueless, for beauty. In the book, which goes a bit more darkly into Nick's insincerities and obsequiousness, Nick believes he will become positive as well. Both end with Nick, and the rest of the characters not having learned much. Adversity hasn't made them better. Rather their own flaws have brought them all down. So it is hardly a positive story. Even Catherine, who reveals others truths and secrets, does it from a manic sense of mischievousness, and not from any sense of moral certainty. (One telling scene is of her sitting in her Uncle's French manoir telling a multi-millionaire, who didn't contribute more than fifty pence to a church restoration that he has too much money. When he asks her (and she has a significant inheritance) what she gave, she claims she had no money on her.)

Some reviewers, and I think the author, make a thing of that Nick's troubles may have to do with homophobia. I didn't see that. The gap between Nick and the Feddens, even between Nick as a potential "mate" for Wani was more financial and cultural than gender oriented. Nick was a hanger on, a sycophant, a leech, because he thirsted after what he saw as a beautiful lifestyle. Gerald was brought down by a financial scandal, then by a petty affair with his secretary. When the news of Nick's sexuality came out in the papers, it wasn't as if everyone in Gerald's circle didn't know Nick was gay. Nick never made a secret of it, except to Wani's father. Gerald flies in a fury at Nick because he thinks that Nick told his daughter about Gerald's affair with his secretary, that Nick had secret knowledge of. And that Cat blabbed to the papers. Without that, Gerald might have survived the financial scandal. But Cat discerned that herself.

In his rage Gerald includes a lot of slurs against gays, as well as against middle class opportunists, etc, when he reviles Nick. Certainly Nick's being gay was a central part of his life, but I don't think it was all that central to the plot's denouement. To me, that had to do more with character, not gender orientation. Nick's problems were because he didn't build a life of his own, but instead based his life on being a hanger on for others, attracted by a lifestyle he had no legitimate ownership of. His father was a buyer and seller of antiquities, a caretaker of ancient clocks in mansions. Nick didn't want to come to the mansions merely as a winder of clocks, or to even buy and sell the clocks. He wanted to live in the mansions.

In the end, he might have learned that beautiful things don't necessarily make for beautiful people. And even with beautiful people, that beauty is only skin deep. But that too is left ambiguous. These characters end the book no better, in most cases much worse, and with no more insight, than when they entered. It's a hard book to like, for that reason. But the characters are so clearly drawn, (even if they are rather shallow, unworthy characters) that you want something more to have happened. I think the author has a dislike for the period and these characters, and doesn't believe anything good should come out of it. One of the most striking scenes is when the housekeeper tells Nick she always suspected he was no good. Nick is stunned, but as reader we have to be in tacit agreement, having seen the false part Nick has often played in all his relationships. Still, the lack of any positive resolution means that the characters stay in your head because you wish it ended otherwise.

A half-liberated gay comes to grief in the Thacher Era
By Donald G. Marshall
Hollinghurst has a justified reputation as a stylish chronicler of gay life in London before gay liberation carried the day. This novel is set in the Thatcher era and the Tory conservatism of that period provides a constant backdrop. The central character is a bit off-putting. A young gay graduate student working on Henry James, he lives in the home of his college friend, whose father is wealthy and a prominent MP. As the middle class son of an antiques dealer, he's in a good position to appreciation the beautiful London house and its furnishings and paintings. In the family's eyes, he is there largely to look after the daughter, who is manic-depressive and occasionally goes off the rails. He goes on a family visit to the country estate of the wife's father and spends some time in their French vacation home as well. But mostly, he looks for sexual partners and shares drugs with them and the daughter. His first partner is a black young man from a poor family, and they have somewhat torrid sex in the private garden attached to the London mansion where he lives. Abruptly, we shift to his second lover, the son of a fabulously wealthy Lebanese family who was a college mate at Oxford. The son, named Wani, starts an art magazine, with the protagonist helping. Wani is completely closeted, but in the end he contracts AIDS and dies. The protagonist hears that his first boyfriend has also died of AIDS. Meanwhile, the MP's affair with his secretary becomes public, and the tabloids create a scandal, including reports of the protagonists sexual escapades in the French vacation home. The result is that he is expelled in disgrace from the London home in scenes whose ugly homophobia brings to the surface the contempt in which he's been held all along. He has been eagerly sucking up to them all along, fantasizing that he's part of a world that completely excludes him, and the lesson seems to be that the vicious arrogance and contempt of the rich should never be doubted. The book meanders quite a lot, and for most of it I wondered where it was going. Hollinghurst's style is undoubtedly smart and brilliant, but it's also a bit mannered, and he falls back on a few mannerisms, attribute a complexity and paradoxicality of feelings to remarks and gestures that give no evidence of carrying so much. He's obviously trying to work in the Jamesian mode, but seems to lack the intensity James achieves in his characters' interactions. The end is intense enough, but rather melodramatic. The protagonist has written an essay on "The Line of Beauty," the S curve of the ogee (the name of the magazine which publishes one issue and will then collapse with the death of Wani, its funder). But it's hard for me to see this as more than an aside or add-on. I can see how Hollinghurst's witty intelligence and lively writing, along with the notion that the novel somehow tells us something about the Thatcher era as gays were beginning to claim public space just as AIDS was breaking out, bagged it the Man Booker Prize. But I found myself a big skeptical about the project, especially given that the protagonist is a rather annoying wannabe who drifts through the story with his face pressed against the plate glass that separates him from the rich and powerful. It keeps occurring to me that he should have known better and expected the humiliation that eventually befalls him.

A classic. Should be on every must read list!
By just thinking
Reading this was, for me, like a long vacation in a gorgeous and sacred place. A perfect book with beautifully crafted sentences, descriptions of place that carry the weight of story, and then also masterful scene and character development. It's a book that anyone interested in writing (or reading like a writer) should read to learn about a beautiful line, the clear and expansive point of view of a close narrator. Let it wash over you.
And readers of all kinds should read this. Don't be put off by the novel of manners feel of it, because this is subversive, and in its subversion is its emotional depth. High school students should be reading this book for its deep reach into the world of hidden lives, the random judgments we feel entitled to make.

Important and wonderful book.
Highly recommend.

See if you can borrow a copy before you invest in this book
By D. Marnatti
Whew! Lots of words. Capleton says what he has to say in every possible way he can think to. Lot's of gems in here - it's just somewhat of an effort to extract them. There's something not right about the publisher, too - there's no index for this book, instead there's a glossary, which, yet again, defines terms defined elsewhere in the text. A good thorough index could make this a useable reference. There are apparently 2 versions of this book and the older of the 2 is more expensive - but you can't really sort it all out because there's no colophon page! What kind of book has no colophon?

One Arm and Other Stories, by T. Williams

Here are the eleven remarkable stories of Tennessee Williams's first volume of short fiction, originally published in 1948 and reissued as a paperbook in response to an increasingly insistent public demand. It was this book which established Williams as a short story writer of the same stature and interest he had shown as a dramatist. Each story has qualities that make it memorable. In “One Arm” we live through his last hours and memories with a 'rough trade" ex-prizefighter who is awaiting execution for murder. "The Field of Blue Children" explores some of the strange ways of the human heart in love, "Portrait of a Girl in Glass" is a luminous and nostalgic recollection of characters who figure in "The Glass Menagerie," while "Desire and the Black Masseur" is an excursion into the logic of the macabre. "The Yellow Bird," well known through the author's recorded reading of it, which tells of a minister's daughter who found a particularly violent but satisfactory way of expiating a load of inherited puritan guilt, may well become part of American mythology.

Fabulous writing, and memorable stories...
By James Hunter Ross
There are several stories, and I enjoyed them all. I had heard The Bear was the most well known, and I certainly enjoyed it and its exploration of man and nature. But the others are very good, memorable, and stand on their own. I have read more than half of Faulkner's works, and I was not disappointed. I heard people complain that the characters and their genealogy could interfere, but I did really care that I didn't have an exact picture of who was related to whom, who begat who. (There are detailed genealogical breakdowns on-line, and you could keep one handy if you really need to.) The writing of woods, the many hunts, weather, as well as the characters is just brilliant!

Good Stuff - - If You Can Hang In
By Reading Fan
This is the 6th or 7th William Faulkner book I've read over the years and they are consistent in a couple of ways: they are about the Old South, and they are worth the read if you can hang in. At his best, Faulkner is like poetry, but often also like a puzzle with one or two pieces missing. His stories usually start in the middle and then jump around time-wise; you are not always sure of whom he is talking about. Also, his existential view is a bit depressing: this is all there is, and there might be a god, but one who is really of no particular use. His sentences are run-on, poorly punctuated, convoluted, and sometimes a page or two long. BUT, if you can wade through all that, the stories are haunting or humorous but never boring. `Go Down Moses' generally gives personal highlights (or lowlights) of the 200-year history of a family that had both black and white branches descended from the same man. Faulkner has unusually keen insight into the racial tension that has plagued our country from even before the beginning, and it shows in his writings.

Faulkner is after all a Pulitzer Prize winner (twice) and even a Nobel Prize winner, and well worth the read - - if you can hang in. At least that is my take on it.

Hard reading but rewarding
By Ahmed Daoud
Go down Moses is certainly not a very accesible novel, but that can be said of the whole Faulkner-oeuvre.

The novel consists of several stories who are related to each other. To my opinion 'Pantaloon in Black' is not so much related to the rest, which tells the lifestory of Isaac McCaslin.

Especially the last stories were very interesting. In "The old people" Faulkner makes a good connection between man and nature especially the Sam Fathers figure is interesting. Faulkner expands on this theme in "The Bear". The notion that nature is losing in "Delta Autumn" is very strong. Together with the struggle between man and nature, Faulkner explores the relationship between black and white. This is extra complicated by the interracial McCaslin-Beauchamp connection.

What makes this book complicated is Faulkners style. I had to read several passages over and over again to understand what was going on. The complicated McCaslin family and introduction of different names (Uncle Bud an Uncle Buddy are often referred to with their official names) makes it also confusing.

It took me almost two years to read it, but nevertheless a great book and worth reading.
