A Bittersweet exchange of letters

There are some books you never thought you would read and when you do, you are only too glad that you did. There have been plenty of such books in my life. They make an appearance when not known to me at all, I may start reading a while later, however when I do, I wonder why I did not earlier. They leave an impression so vivid that I know I will reread the book. It is almost like food you never liked and somehow it seems to grow on you so much that you relish it. This has happened to me quite lately and the book it happened with is, "The Other Side of the Table" by Madhumita Mukherjee.

I never liked novels written in the form of letters. Somehow it did not work for me at all. I tried reading 86 Charing Cross Road, liked it a little and some more, but just left it at that. There have been other books, on similar lines which I did not love or want to go back to. It is not that I do not like reading letters, however reading them in a book format, more so when fictional, does not cut it for me. So when I received a copy of, "The Other Side of the Table" I found it pretty ordinary, till I started reading it and loving it more so, and that almost changed my perception of this form of story-telling.

"The Other Side of the Table" is about, as it always happens in most books, two people and the letters exchanged by them over a couple of years. Uma and Abhi almost got into my skin while reading this book. I remember watching, "Tumhari Amrita" - one of the first plays I had watched and I fell in love with it. This book also reminded me of it to a very large extent. Uma and Abhi are childhood friends. It is surprising that they are childhood friends considering Uma is younger by 10 years and yet that does not matter. The letters are written from 1990 to 1999 and reflect almost everything about those years. Abhi is a surgeon in London. Uma is studying medicine in Calcutta. That in short is the premise of the story.

Why did I love this book compared to the others? I loved the way it was written. At no point, as a reader was I bored and at the same time, I did not feel that the book was way too sentimental, given what happens later (which I will not reveal). The writing is easy and does not veer into medical terms (which it could have) that the reader might not understand. There are issues mentioned in the book like women's rights (to some extent) and yet it is done in a subtle and understated manner.

The book also reminded me of "One Day" by David Nicholls in a very good way and I loved the way I could connect with several other reads in the past due to this one read. Off late, I have started reading a lot of Indian fiction and it is suiting me just fine.

"The Other Side of the Table" is a bittersweet read, somewhat like life. I would definitely recommend this to everyone. A read that will for sure leave you with a smile on your face and maybe that is most required in times such as these.

I have read the book through once, & I am about to start reading it for the second time. It is absolutely an AMAZING book.
This is Mabels best book ever. Each chapter you read, you can fee.e.e.e.l your heart saying YES.S. & understanding the truths at a deep level. It has blown me away. I will write another review when I can wrap my mind around what Mabel is trying her hardest to get through to us all. We need to think, & feel more with our heart's & keep our intellect & mind out of the way. Yes the cleaning is difficult to do all of the time. I find If I read at least one chapter a day it helps to keep me focused on doing the cleaning. I highly recommend it!!

Love this book

I just recently "found" Ho oponopono and wanted to learn more about it. I bought 3 books on it. This one, "The Sovereignity of Love" and Zero Limits". Both this book and "The Sovereignity of Love" are fantastic. Both are quick reads with a big impact. I have been putting this into practice in my life and am noticing a difference in both how I feel and how I interact with others as well as how they respond to me. It truly is "easy". I have always known that our outer world is merely a reflection of our inner world. This is a wonderful, uplifting way to clean up your inner world. I realize that it may seem too easy and that change requires a lot of hard work but I am firm believer that letting go is the key. This book shows you how to do that. I highly recommend it

Mabel has a gentle and respectful way of writing. You are not pounded with absolutes but gently reminded of something you forgot as part of your daily self care. This is the second book I've read and I can't wait for her next book.

This book is useless. A real dummy book needs to have step by step instructions. A real dummy book is a "how to" book, For example: How to
send e-mail? Book should direct user to click on this....then click on that....etc. The iMac book for dummies is a boring manual with no practical
use.

very comprehensive but quick ref guide could be more useful

Very good find on Amazon. Very comprehensive and I'm sure will come in handy.....at some point. Only giving 4 stars right now because I really haven't had to use it much. Set up for the MAC is pretty straight forward even for a first time user like me. But the Quick Reference Guide a purchased at the same time as this has been very useful and has come in quite handy several times. I almost would recommend buying it over iMac for dummies but if for some reason something should go wrong with the system.....you may need something more comprehensive.

Begining Artist must read

I have just finished reading this book. I am an artist and I plan to give this book to young relative of mine for Christmas. It covers every aspect of drawing in an easy to understand way. I also like how the author combines other mediums with and in his drawings. The challenge to use several mediums in a single project is great. I will refer to this book many times when I work on my projects as well.
I would recommend this book to anyone, young or old, beginner or advanced who wishes to create a piece of art they can be proud to display.

I almost finished with this book and have concluded it is well worth the money.

It has a lot of information useful to the drawing student that I have not found elsewhere and I have a lot of drawing/art books.

Subjects are a quick and dirty summary except fot the demonstrations which cover maybe three pages and take you step by step through the process of makeing the drawing.

Comprehensive Guide!

Drawing has always fascinated me, and even at 60 I keep buying books like this to revive and refresh me. What is more, the tools available at the disposal of the modern artist has been expanding fast in the recent decades and therefore it is always good keep in touch with the more recent books in drawing.

The book, as the title says, is indeed a comprehensive one. The author tries to introduce the reader and the potential artist starting from the basics of drawing, gradually leading him/her to more advanced ideas, techniques, and tools. It is a progressive approach, and -- believe me -- one can become successful in drawing only if one is willing to work in a progressive manner. No one becomes an artist in a day by learning a few steps here and there in a haphazard manner.

I commend the book for its structured approach, effective communication of ideas, numerous tips, and progressive training of the potential artist. The author has covered practically everything that the reader/student needs to know and I could not find any major omissions.

I was fully rewarded by going through this book. If you have to buy a single book, I strongly recommend this as the candidate.

The Cuckold Genre is Growing leaps and bounds

Alex has provided the reader with a quick hot tale of wanton lust.
A wife realizes she wants more and her husbands hard little dicky
can't deny it turns him on too. The cuckold and hotwife movement is
really amazing, and the erotica that defines it shows just how exciting
things can be. You can't go wrong reading this novella- enjoy!

An Opportunity Missed

A real disappointment. The novella's opening sequence (contained in the sample) is very strong: attractive 30-something housewife Linda and her loving but poorly endowed husband Dan meet Linda's sexually aggressive friend Cheryl and Cheryl's arrogant but well hung boyfriend Eddie for an evening of drinks and hot tubbing. Linda conceives an immediate though reluctant attraction for Eddie which only serves to underline Dan's inadequacies. After Cheryl and Eddie enact a red hot exhibitionist scene for Linda and Dan things seems poised to take off but then...they don't. Linda does eventually consummate her lust with Eddie while Dan observes, but the scenes aren't nearly as intense as they could have been. Eddie then disappears from the book entirely, while Cheryl only sticks around for some tedious exchanges of psychobabble. Linda inexplicably replaces virile Eddie with a couple of dull and unattractive lunkheads whose sole virtue is the size of their equipment. And Dan? Well, one of the hallmarks of this type of erotica is that you're supposed to feel the psychological torment of the husband as he experiences conflicting feelings of humiliation (at being proved inadequate by a more dominant male) and excitement (at seeing his wife brought to new heights of pleasure). But Dan is such an underdeveloped character (no pun intended) that it's impossible to feel anything for him. He's just a cipher, a place holder. Several times during the narrative, Linda thinks something like "I knew Dan was there but I didn't care." Neither will you.

With the exception of that opening hot tub scene, the intimate episodes are poorly described and uninvolving. It crossed my mind more than a few times that maybe one author wrote the first sequence, and someone else finished the rest of the book. Probably not true but that's how great the dichotomy is. In fairness, Hathaway shows some promising sparks of talent here, but this first effort is a real opportunity missed.

This is a brilliantly written book. Alex Hathaway shows great insight into human relationships and a real talent for character development. The sex scenes are sizzling, and they're so much more erotic because they involve people we've got to know.

Managing to Have Fun is Matt Weinstein's artful collection of actually fun things managers have managed to do in the name of work. His stories of the silly, good-hearted things they've done are entertaining, empowering and inspiring. Not profound. Not transforming. But definitely funniferous.

really strong resource

I purchased this book to teach a psychology course for direct entry midwives. As a psychologist who had taught several other courses, I am used to books that do not cover everything I want to cover but this did a great job. It is written in British English so a few things caught my students and me off guard but otherwise it appeared to be well written, easy to read, and a very useful resource to introduce important psychological concepts to non-psychologists in midwifery.
