Solid, basic text

I adopted this book as a textbook for my course in global trade and marketing. It was the ONLY book I found that actually covered the subject I wanted to teach and did so at a level that would engage my (MBA) students. In using it, I find that I chose well. Students report finding it useful and on target.

The only negatives lie in the book's first chapter. It seems that its authors wanted to place the text in the universe and attempted to use its first chapter to do so. Had I read only the first chapter, I would not have selected the book for my class. Fortunately, though, later chapters read well and have good topical focus.

Be aware that a "gray market" edition is circulating. Although marked for distribution only in the Indian Subcontinent, its content appears to be similar, if not identical, to the one coming from Pearson out of the UK. It lacks color, and its printing lacks good finish, but its content seems to be identical. I randomly checked pages, and all that I checked were the same between the two books. The gray market edition is substantially cheaper!

A Classic Work

A very well done re-publishing of James G. Needham, Stuart W. Frost , and Beatrice H. Tothill's Leaf-mining Insects. The original book costs about $60 used but the condition might vary. This book has excellent pages as if the old book was new. The graphics have been perfectly copied and the gray-tones in the illustrations are accurate. I appreciated this copy.

About the Author
Emmet Fox, who lived from 1886 to 1951, was born in Ireland. His father was a member of parliament, and Mr. Fox studied electrical engineering in England. About the Author
Clifford Whittingham Beers (1876 – 1943) was the founder of the American mental hygiene movement. Beers was born in New Haven, Connecticut to Ida and Robert Beers on March 30, 1876. He was one of five children, all of whom would suffer from psychological distress and would die in mental institutions, including Beers himself (see "Clifford W. Beers, Advocate for the Insane"). He graduated from the Sheffield Scientific School at Yale in 1897. In 1900 he was first confined to a private mental institution for depression and paranoia. He would later be confined to another private hospital as well as a state institution. During these periods he experienced and witnessed serious maltreatment at the hands of the staff. After the publication of A Mind That Found Itself (1908), an autobiographical account of his hospitalization and the abuses he suffered during, he gained the support of the medical profession and others in the work to reform the treatment of the mentally ill.

Groundbreaking work in the field of mental health

Clifford Whittingham Beers, 1876-1943, was the American founder of the mental hygiene movement, born in New Haven, Conn., grad. Sheffield Scientific School, Yale, 1897.

After the publication of this book, A Mind That Found Itself (1908), which is an autobiographical account of his confinement in a mental institution, he had the support of the medical profession and others in the work to prevent mental disorders. He was a leader in the field until his retirement in 1939.

This book is an amazing account of what it was like to be institutionalized at a time when mental illness received little attention or respect.

A groundbreaking effort towards the acceptance of mental health as a serious disease.

Simply an awesome read.

Great Account of Psychiatric Illness and the History of Mental Health

I have been a psychiatric nurse for 15 years, and enjoy reading about the history of psychiatry. I work with patients, who have chronic mental illness, and who have been in the mental health system for many decades. . .some who have been through the same "treatment" Mr. Beers had been through. Clifford Beers wrote his story and became one of the pioneers of mental health advocacy, evolving in the patient rights we have today. It's an interesting story and one worth reading.

Wonderful Book

I read old copy of this book back in 1977 when I began working in a state mental Health Hospital and found it in the nursing library. It is one of those books that I look back on as life changing as I beleive it affected my decision to get a degree and make a career in the Mental health field. It was very powerful.

About the Author

David R. Hutchinson prepares both undergraduate and graduate students for�careers in psychology and counseling. His areas of special focus are group work,�addictions, and grieving. A former Peace Corps volunteer, David’s priorities include�travel and maintaining an international perspective in his life and work. He has�trained counselors in Grenada and established sister school relationships between�five schools in Vermont and Grenada. In Vermont, David continues his emphasis�on intensive, process-oriented coursework with long weekend retreats at an�off-campus lodge near Caspian Lake in the woods of the Northeast Kingdom.

In 2006, David was honored with the Distinguished Faculty of the Year Award.�He holds positions on the boards of the New England School of Addiction Studies�and Northwest Counseling and Support Services in Franklin County, Vermont. He�received his doctoral degree from State University of New York, Buffalo.

An invaluable reference!

This book offers invaluable references for travel, literature art...heck, even songs by Sting! I purchased my first copy while in art school where I couldn't keep straight all of the tales of love, betrayal and revenge in the ancient world. After four months in Italy and Greece it is worn, torn and lovingly wine stained, but it has served me well. I used it to decipher names on structures in the Roman Forum and to reveal the meaning of paintings in the Ufizzi. Without it my travels would not have been nearly as rich.
