Five Cucumber Sandwiches, Thinly Sliced

It's hard to imagine a more British family than the Durrells. Mother Durrell, born in India. Gerald, the naturalist, raised in Corfu before the Second World War. Larry, the novelist, sarcastic and scathing but unfailingly polite to foreigners and strangers. Leslie, the gun-crazy older brother, slightly deaf and slightly near-sighted but who refuses to get glasses. And Margo, well-meaning, but vague. As completely incapable of mastering a simile or a metaphor as a trash compactor pushing up the daisies.

While teaching English at the NOVA conversation school in Tokyo in the late 1990s, I was introduced to Gerald Durrell's classic memoirs by my British friend J. My Family and Other Animals features English children growing up wild on the island of Corfu. Their friends and neighbors are rural Greeks who delight in what Gerry calls SITUATIONS...and always, always, manage to make a bad situation worse, in a genuinely hilarious way.

In The Picnic and Suchlike Pandemonium, brother Larry returns to England after 10 years away - years which have been taken up by World War II and other depressing events. In her inimitable fashion, Mother decides to have a picnic on the beach in a remote area. Predictably, everything goes wrong.

I read the first chapters out on my deck on a delightfully hot summer's day last week, Gin and Tonic in hand. Soon I started laughing so uncontrollably I was afraid the neighbors would breach our perimeter to make sure I wasn't sobbing hysterically. It was that funny.

Yes, It Was That Funny.

And the Misadventures Continue...

As the Durrell family finishes their picnic away from the pong of dead horse, they rest secure in the knowledge that the radio (in which Mother believes implicitly due to its fidelity during WWII) - the radio has forecast fine, warm, sunny weather. They wake from a nap to find the skies as dark as midnight and a thunderstorm upon them. Walking back to the car, they find that Margo's husband Jack has left the top down on the Rolls and the car is awash with water.

Driving slowly to the nearest village, the car eventually breaks down. They find a farmer in a field who agrees to loan them his horse and cart. "Molly" has an uncanny knack of returning to her owner, it seems, no matter how late he's been out at the pub. Unfortunately after a few hours it becomes clear to the Durrells that no matter what they wish, Molly is returning to the farmer post-haste: Sans pub and telephone where they might potentially have called for help...

Brother Larry's comments must only be imagined, if you don't wish to laugh yourself into a jelly.

Each of the 6 stories in this book is delightful save for the strangeness of the last one - Some sort of haunted tale that reads like fiction Gerry wasn't able to publish elsewhere? Never mind, it's worth a read for The Picnic alone.

Funny and beautifully written, with an awesome bonus at the end

Durrell is one of my most favorite authors and I had last read this book when I was in high school. It was such a pleasure to rediscover his writing and meet his usual cast of eccentrics. But the best part about the book is the bonus gothic horror story at the end- The Entrance. I bought this book just to read that one more time. It is so well written- creepy and immensely scary. Makes you wish he had written more stories in that genre. And trust me, after reading that, you will hang towels on all the mirrors at home for at least a week! Great buy!

Gerald Durrell writes comedy like no other. I thoroughly enjoyed all the stories of his family in this book, just like the others. The only odd thing was the macabre story at the end, which was very well written.

This is written well after they left the island, so the family is all grown up and living on their own, but some of the stories are about their family and a trip they have taken together. So much comedy in the Greek ship trip alone!

Larry's humor is usually what has me laughing loudly. Who doesn't love his sarcastic wit? I love reading about his entire family as they are all such different characters, and funny in their own way.

About the Author
"Eric Chaisson." Eric holds a doctorate in astrophysics from Harvard University, where he spent ten years on the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. For five years, Eric was a Senior Scientist and Director of Educational Programs at the Space Telescope Science Institute and Adjunct Professor of Physics at Johns Hopkins University. He then joined Tufts University, where he is now Professor of Physics, Professor of Education, and Director of the Wright Center for Innovative Science Education. He has written nine books on astronomy, which have received such literary awards as the Phi Beta Kappa Prize, two American Institute of Physics Awards, Harvard's Smith-Weld Prize for Literary Merit, and the Walter P. Kistler Book Award. He has published more than 100 scientific papers in professional journals, and has also received Harvard's Bok Prize for original contributions to astrophysics. "Steve McMillan." Steve holds a bachelor's and master's degree in Mathematics from Cambridge University and a doctorate in Astronomy from Harvard University. He held post-doctoral positions at the University of Illinois and Northwestern University, where he continued his research in theoretical astrophysics, star clusters, and numerical modeling. Steve is currently Distinguished Professor of Physics at Drexel University and a frequent visiting researcher at Princeton's Institute for Advanced Study and the University of Tokyo. He has published more than 50 scientific papers in professional journals.

Interesting projects but seemingly overrated

I like this book. It has a lot of good projects in it for reference, but there are several photos and drawings that have been scaled way past their acceptable viewing rates making the drawings/ photos pixelated and illegible. I also wish there was more description about some of the houses - the way they countered the slope of the site, to include structural/ foundation information. Beyond that, a good book for inspiration.

About the Author
Mary Berry is the the much-loved judge on the BBC's The Great British Bake Off. She has more than over 70 books to her name, many of which have been written with her assistant and friend, Lucy Young. Cordon Bleu-trained in Paris, Mary began her career as a magazine cooking�editor before publishing her first cookbook in 1966. Mary is also an AGA expert and taught AGA masterclasses for many years from her home with Lucy. In 2009 Mary was awarded the highly coveted Guild of Food Writers Lifetime Achievement Award and in 2012 she was made a CBE in the Queen's Birthday Honors list.

Quick, Easy and Luscious!

Several times a year my daughter or granddaughter who live in the UK hop the pond with a suitcase full of Goodies for Grandma - always including several new cookbooks. The latest visit produced quite a haul, including Mary Berry at Home. (The actual title is "Mary Berry and Lucy Young At Home." Lucy is Mary's long time assistant.) I'm building quite a stash of Mary Berry books, but this one has very quickly become a favorite, one I keep immediately to hand.

Very few of the recipes in Mary Berry at Home are at all complicated, though you will find a few things that are imminently suitable for a special Sunday or holiday meal. You'll find lots of recipes for things to produce at the drop of a pin when somebody has to put dinner on the table and a wealth of little bites - appetizers, sandwiches, and the like. One of my most favorite pages is the two page spread of "Proper Sandwiches" you'll find on pages 234-236. Mary and Lucy give a long list of sandwich ideas of the sort that one serves for tea or picnics. Among them, the very best chicken sandwich I've ever eaten (I hated tarragon until I tried this with fresh tarragon) and the best cucumber sandwich too.

There are also a number of drool-worthy desserts, at least some of which are small. I adore the Mini Victoria Sandwiches - a yellow cake filled with raspberry or strawberry jam and whipped cream, usually dusted on top with confectioner's sugar. The recipe makes a dozen little cakes that you split and fill. Since there is only one of me, ten of them (unfilled) go into the freezer for later. Also drool-worthy - a Chocolate and Orange Pavlova and Mini Banoffee Pies (crumb crust, caramel filling, fresh banana, whipped cream. YUM.)

Every recipe features not only very clear instructions that are easy to follow but also suggestions for making the dish ahead of time &/or freezing where appropriate. Recipes are in UK metric, so you will need a digital scale for baking. A decent one can be had for $20 or less and will open up a whole world of cooking to you. Teaspoons and tablespoons are the same as we use here in the US.

There are a few "translations" you need to be aware of -

Plain Flour - All Purpose Flour
caster sugar - superfine or bartenders sugar
icing sugar - confectioner's sugar
Sun Blushed tomatoes are a kind of half-dried tomato not available in the US, but you'll find recipes online for making your own.
Knob of butter - about 2-3 tablespoons, what Grandma called "butter the size of an egg"

BTW - did I mention the Posh Jacket Potatoes and the Maple Roasted Root Vegetables? Those last are a real hit at Grandma's, even with those who don't like sweet potatoes or butternut squash or parsnips.

Another great cookbook from Mary Berry!

Mary Berry is just a queen of British cooking and this is a great addition to her large collection of cookbooks. There seems to be something for everyone. You will have to convert the oven temperatures to Fahrenheit, but that's not a very big deal. There is a conversion table in the front of the book, Fahrenheit temps just aren't listed on the individual recipes. Some of it isn't really suitable to most Americans; for instance, unless you live where you can hunt pheasant, it's not likely you're going to be able to just buy some at the store, and I don't know if I've ever seen smoked haddock in a store over here. However, there are many, many recipes that are wonderful that we can cook here in the US with no problem. The "Chicken with Vermouth & Sage" is a nice play on the Italian "Chicken Saltimbocca". It's very quick and easy, and white cooking wine substituted for the vermouth still worked fine. The "Chocolate Obsession" cake is definitely on my list to make when I can cheat on my diet a little later! It looks AMAZING!! The "West Country Gratin"--oh, my! "Maple-spiced Chicken" is definitely on my to do list as well. I really like the "Time for Tea" section in the back. My daughters love having tea parties, and these are great recipes for simple tea parties at home as well as larger, grander tea parties to entertain.

This book is a joy just to read through, not to mention cook out of! There's not a photo for every recipe, but there are plenty of photos scattered throughout. "Mary Berry at Home" is a cookbook that I highly recommend and hope to enjoy for years to come.

Drier Than It Should Be

American Art Since 1945 tackles a period of art that is drenched in social and cultural change. Post WW2 art forms are about breaking out, exploring, and defining new forms of creativity & expression. Yet this book is so dry and academic it fails to draw the reader in or excite. Instead the author repeats his few insights over and over and over. Then he repeats what he just said. And then he states it differently yet again. His writing style comes across like an undergraduate's; written with thesaurus in one hand and keyboard (or pen) in the other. The author tries much too hard to sound like & prove he's learned. That said, the book is well illustrated. And the text (style that it is) ties in to the images. But I think that true experts should be able to use accessible, exciting language to make even dry subjects (not this art, for sure!) fun to delve into and read about...this author didn't do that for me.

Tim O'Brien has been writing about Vietnam in one way or another ever since he served there as an infantryman in the late 1960s. His earliest work on the subject, If I Die in a Combat Zone, was an intensely personal memoir of his own tour of duty; his books since then have featured many of the same elements of fear, boredom, and moral ambiguity but in a fictional setting. In 1994 O'Brien wrote In the Lake of the Woods, a novel that, while imbued with the troubled spirit of Vietnam, takes place entirely after the war and in the United States. The main character, John Wade, is a man in crisis: after spending years building a successful political career, he finds his future derailed during a bid for the U.S. Senate by revelations about his past as a soldier in Vietnam. The election lost by a landslide, John and his wife, Kathy, retreat to a small cabin on the shores of a Minnesota lake--from which Kathy mysteriously disappears.

Was she murdered? Did she run away? Instead of answering these questions, O'Brien raises even more as he slowly reveals past lives and long-hidden secrets. The revelation that he was present at a Vietnamese village massacre (read My Lai) and had artfully buried that fact derails his political career overnight, and he flees with his much-loved wife, Kathy, to a remote hideaway in Minnesota's north woods. One morning he awakes, after a night of terrible visions, to find her gone. A huge search fails to locate her, and police suspicion turns on Wade. Then he too disappears. Ever a man who loved tricks and mystery, known to his Army buddies as Sorcerer, has Wade always lived a lie? Did he kill Kathy and put her body in the lake? Did they escape their problems together? O'Brien openly asks the reader such questions, in a series of rhetorical footnotes that amount to an uncomfortable authorial intrusion. An ongoing series of chapters with quotes from My Lai testimony, books on magic, General Custer, military violence and opinions of people in the book about what really happened with John and Kathy goes seriously astray. These faults distract from, but cannot completely offset, the power of O'Brien's narrative, his affinity for abnormal psychological states, his remarkable painting of the hostile autumn solitudes. It seems like a book that needed more work to live up to its best, and perhaps editor Seymour Lawrence's death last winter deprived it of that. If so, a stark pity; but O'Brien remains a terrific writer. 75,000 first printing; author tour.

Chilling, even on re-reading

I first read this book about 5 years ago, and ended up debating it for weeks with folks in my office. I recently picked it up again, & found it just as haunting, compelling & intriguing. I did, though, take away a different feel from the book than I had the first time I read it.
It is no spoiler that the author does not solve the book's central mystery: the author tells you that if you want answers, "read another book." Readers can reach different conclusions as to the fate of Kathy Wade. Indeed, if my own experience is any guage, the same reader can reach a different conclusion on subsequent readings.
This book will mean different things to different people. For some, it is a mystery; for others, a dark love story; for others, it is a tale of Vietnam.
O'Brien's devices - the Evidence & Hypothesis chapters interspersed throughout the book - work fabulously. The Evidence chapters give a variety of outside perspectives which inform, or offer differing views, if not explanations, on the text, which jumps back & forth itself between the present & various points in the past. The Hypothesis chapters propose alternative answers to the central riddle.
O'Brien's clear prose is made more interesting, because the reader knows he is only getting one sliver, one part of the whole picture, and may be more or less "true".
If you have not read this book, do so. If you have, read it again: you will be amazed, entranced again -- & it may be a whole new experience for you.

Loved It!

I got this book first assigned in my English class in college and I was getting the feel that the theme of the class was not going to be about dreams as listed in the catalogue, but rather the Vietnam war (weird, but it did go like that). So naturally, I got bummed when we had to start reading this book; however, as I read more, I got really into it. I would go into the Dining Commons and I would end up there for a good hour well after I finished my meal just reading on and on. The way it is written through a story, theories, and evidence is something I have not read before and it enticed me. Trust me when I say that I think the people in my class who bs'd the essay for the paper regarding this book truly missed out on a great read.

Better than GONE GIRL

We had a really terrific discussion in our book group on this novel. So much to talk about: what we all carry: secrets, lies, past traumus that still haunt, what constitutes evidence and truth, how we construct and reconstruct our public and private selves. And the narrative structure itself generated interesting comments. This is a very rich book.
