Good book for an overview of transit oriented development

This book offers a good overview on transit oriented development. It is not specifically targeted at experts (it has a rather limited scientific content and it is written in very plain language) and offers a major review of many projects and implementations of TOD. The expert in this field may be already familiar with many topics, but the book offers good insights for graduate students and pratictioners, and it can be a good complement for a professional library or a private collection of books on planning.

interesting discussion of tradeoffs

This book, as you might guess from the title, is about attempts to create mixed-use developments near transit stations. Some of the projects profiled were in suburbs or automobile-oriented cities, and as a result ran into more difficulties than I would have expected: for example, retail may be difficult to finance when there are not yet enough residents to support it, and parking creates a variety of problems, When planners propose small amounts of parking, neighbors complain because they fear parking will spill over onto their streets. But when they propose large amounts of parking, more sophisticated neighbors fear that the parking will mean more cars and more traffic. Surface parking blights the landscape, but underground garages are more expensive. Where streets are wide and car-oriented, cities must decide whether to pay for improved infrastructure (such as street trees and widened sidewalks) to improve walkability.

Generally, I thought this book was a bit complex for the average layperson; my impression is that its intended audience was practicing urban planners and maybe the occasional graduate student.

David Perry is a 25-year video game industry veteran. Perry launched his professional career at just 15 years of age by writing video game programming books in his native Northern Ireland. Since then, Perry or his studio Shiny Entertainment has developed numerous games (including The Terminator, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Mc Donald's Global Gladiators, 7-Up's Cool Spot, Disney's Aladdin, Earthworm Jim, MDK, Sacrifice etc.) His last console titles were based on the Matrix franchise from Warner Brothers. His games have sold an estimated one BILLION dollars at retail. After selling Shiny to Atari, Perry is now the Chief Creative Officer of Acclaim Games and is also the founder of a new company called GameInvestors.com (to help developers find funding for their games.) Perry sits on the Advisory Boards of the Game Developers Conference, the Hollywood and Games Conference, the Gamers Expo & Westwood College. He's a regular speaker at key industry events and has even spoken at prestigious events like at the TED.COM conference, and at universities like MIT, USC, UCLA etc. In July 2008 he's being awarded a Doctorate by Queen's University at the same time as the Prime Minister of England (Tony Blair.) Great. A huge book of possibilities

Great. A huge book of possibilities. This is a tool for generating ideas, finding alternatives, asking questions and exploring them. Excellent first chapter too "What is a game and why do we play?", since these important questions will determine every other choice that follows.
Perry understands that models are just models, whether it's a systematization of story structure or game mechanics, they're procedures for getting predictable results. Instead he places his emphasis on ideas, a good idea could be developed under a variety of systems or combinations of systems or lack of a system or levels of inspiration, but it is highly unlikely, antithetical, to work in the opposite direction and go from system to original idea. As the title says "brainstorming toolbox".

I cannot recommend this book highly enough

David Perry on Game Design: A Brainstorming Toolbox is one of the most amazing books I've ever seen, and that sentiment is mirrored by absolutely everyone I've shown the book to, without exception.

This is what the subtitle says: a game design brainstorming toolbox. It is a giant tome of a book, the width and height of a textbook a thousand pages long, and contains lists of information on what feels like absolutely everything: boss battle mechanics, SWAT radio codes, feelings you can give with music, time manipulation mechanics, ways to protect a location, possible causes of death, modern explosives, 20s slang, mini-game mechanics, quest ideas, character archetypes... every page is exploding with ideas, and the density of information in the book is extremely high.

The only way to even begin to appreciate and wrap your head around the nature and value of this book is to have a copy in front of you and flip through it. A couple minutes of that has been enough to make most other game designers I know immediately resolve to buy a copy. If you're a game designer looking for a tool and a reference to aid in brainstorming and idea generation, I can't recommend this book highly enough.

Excellent resource for game designers.

This is an excellent book on game design. You can tell the author has a lot of industry experience and a passion for game design. This book is massive and well worth the price. It covers just about every genre of video games and includes many examples to help you through the design process. What really makes this book stand out from the others dealing with this same topic, is that it goes into an explanation as to why you should do something and then gives you plenty of examples to work with. I suggest that everyone who is interested in game design check this book out.

For instance, by estimating the present-day licensing fees for the Beastie Boys’ Paul’s Boutique (1989) and Public Enemy’s Fear of a Black Planet (1990), two albums from hip-hop’s golden age, the authors show that neither album could be released commercially today. Just wow

The movie of 9 1/2 weeks was on TV (haven't seen the movie in decades) and I noticed the line "based on the book..." I looked up Elizabeth McNeill in the Kindle book dept and bought the book. The book is amazingly well written and incredible that it is something of an autobiography. It must have taken a lot of courage to relive her experiences while writing the pages. It's a great story of the lure a D/s relationship can have and the warning of what it can do to not only one's body but soul.
It's a quick read but I don't feel like I've been cheated. I can feel the author through her words and that is enough. Intense.

not a love story at all.

I like the memoir of the writer, Elizabeth McNeill. very unusual read. It is not a love story for those of you out there considering buying it . Its more of a sad story about a regular mid 30s woman living in NYC and a guy whom you think is kinda ok, but quickly it turns dark. I think the story is based on true events in her life that happened to her for a couple months of her life, but this strange relationship messed with her finally she had enough and ended it. My personal opinion is that it could easily happen to anyone looking for love, but ending up with the wrong person. Not a happy story at all. just want to be clear about that. thank you.

Interesting perspective,but boring

I was curious about this book as I've heard so much about it. The story was interesting, how this woman allowed this man to completely dominate her, and coming from her perspective. That is why I don't give it 1 star. But too, there was pages and pages that I skipped over, like about 10 pages of her searching through his closets and drawers. I don't see what is interesting about that. I won't ever pick up this book again, as a matter of fact, I threw it away. It wasn't what I expected. I am curious to see how the movie goes, though, and will most likely rent that. It was the author's way of talking too, where you didn't know who was saying what. I can't imagine going through this though, and was horrified by what he had her do. The scene where he has her dressing as a man would have been my limit. That grossed me out. Then the prostitute scene was too much. I'm in no way a prude, but the book bored me.

Have trouble memorizing? This book is for you!

I absolutely loved this book for anatomy...and still use it for more advanced classes today! The drawings are very accurate and Pasquini does a wonderful job providing alternative views. I really appreciated the little poems, etc. that he provides as a way to memorize difficult things, such as arcade formulas. And, you may just need the cute little horse on the potty, cows reproducing and being pregnant to allow a small smile during that difficult first year of vet school.

One of the better Anatomy books I've come across

Most Anatomy books will put you to sleep but this one is easier to read. The text is well spaced, summarised and there are many illustrations (in the form of sketches). As a Vet student, I find the book quite helpful and comprehensive, too bad there is no color or actual pictures. When studying bones for example, it helps to see the tuberosities, contours and general features from real photos.

Great book! Too bad it is only black and white

Great book as far as the content is concerned. It is full of sketches and illustrations (sorry, no real photos), packed with detail. There is reference to the anatomical features of all domestic animals (even Llamas), but less info for the pig. There is also mentioning of the clinical importance for several anatomical features, as well as species variations. Very practical indead, clear and detailed illustrations. Humorous animal characters make the material "ligher". Recommended especially for vet students like myself. It is a good reference book.

About the Author

Diane Crocker is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology and Criminology at Saint Mary's University in Canada, and holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from York University. Her research areas include violence against women, criminal harassment and the use of law to address social problems, particularly those that disproportionately affect women.

Crime in Canada

This is an excellent book. It provides a great overview of Crime in Canada. You'll read statistics (presented in an easy to read and interesting manner), programs that work and don't work will be discussed, and you'll learn why tough on crime legislation in Canada is a bad idea (it get votes but fails to reduce crime). Its easy to imagine that crime in Canada is getting worse, but that's just our perception. You'll learn that crime in Canada is down. Its pretty scary that we are adopting the tough on crime model of the U.S. given that the U.S. has (BY FAR) the highest incarceration rates in the world. I was very shocked to learn that a person was more likely to commit a more serious crime after serving Federal time. Yes, I get it. We need to punish the offender. But, if throwing offenders in a Federal Prison just turns out a worse criminal what's the point? I was surprised to learn that community programs are more successful in rehabilitating the offender. So, if the idea is that we want to make Canada a safer place, tough on crime legislation is not the way to go. Anyway, I just loved this book. It gave a great overview of Crime in Canada. It opened my eyes to what is going on in Canada and it has alarmed me as to the dangerous path our current government is going.
