Review
"Mysteries hidden in plain sight in a grand painting. A fascinating adventure in the world of art and artists. Amateurs of the works of Roberson Davies will love it." - Catherine Delors, author of Mistress of the Revolution and For the King
From the Inside Flap
The Paris Herald is run on the theory that most society people, and Americans generally, would much rather see their names in print and those of their friends than read any amount of news.
-- Albert Stevens Crockett
From the Back Cover
Mr. Julius Stewart is at present engaged upon a large work, the subject of which is a fashionable christening in a private parlor. He might not possibly care to have the scheme made public, and it is sufficient to say that he has treated his subject in an original manner. --"Art Notes," New York Herald (Paris), March 31, 1892

I am not a gusher...but i just may break my own rule and do so for this book, Bonfire of the Vanderbilts. I can NOT say enough about how well written it is. I've liked this author for awhile now, but THIS book takes the literary cake!
Generations have questioned the meaning of the painting THE BAPTISM by Julius Stewart so plan on joining the ranks...it's that intriguing.
A mystery within a mystery with a setting that goes between the present day and the late 1800's. It's not a book you can fly through, there is a lot to absorb so take your time..the author keeps the reader immensely interested so no sweat.
( i actually loved how the author inserted his own character in the writing by the way )

A great read for anyone who likes their contemporary drama flavored with historical intrigue.

After the groundbreaking "Mr. Ballpoint", one of my all-time favorite novels, I've come to expect the best from Gerald Everett Jones. This latest effort certainly meets, if not exceeds, those expectations. Mr. Jones' writing enters me like a sweet liqueur. His style is unique, yet somehow familiar. There is a soothing consistent wholeness to the way his narration partners with his story line. It almost feels like I'm watching a movie when I read his novels. Which is not to say that he ever slips into superficiality. He is more Bergman than Spielberg, fearless in his willingness to explore the nuances of a scene or character, until we join him in a deeper understanding. Speaking of understanding, I learned so much about the craft of painting, what an artist goes through, how paintings are conceived, how scenarios generated and depicted, how characters within the framework of the scene depicted participate in a silent narrative, overall how much is going on in a painting beyond what is seen at first glance. Very fascinating stuff!
At the same time, a good novel comes down to a good story. "Bonfire of the Vanderbilts" is a great story! I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes their contemporary drama flavored with historical intrigue.

Intriguing Amateur Detective Story in the World of Art
By Robin Kay Quinn
I always admired the huge painting "The Baptism" at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and how it captured a moment in time. What a fun adventure to follow an investigation of its history and connection to the Vanderbilts while exploring the life of its artist, Julius Stewart. Amazing detail is interwoven into an entertaining story. The author seamlessly takes us back and forth between modern times and Stewart's world in Paris and Europe in the late 1800s. Surprising story twists keep you reading to find out what happens next!
