Elementary Mathematics Is Anything but Elementary: Content and Methods From A Developmental Perspective, by Damon L. Bahr, Lisa Ann DeGarc

Inspiring, empowering, and preparing preservice teachers for today''s classroom, ELEMENTARY MATHEMATICS IS ANYTHING BUT ELEMENTARY: CONTENT AND METHODS FROM A DEVELOPMENTAL PERSPECTIVE is a comprehensive program that delivers both a content and a methods text. Serving as a professional development guide for both pre-service and in-service teachers, this text''s integrated coverage helps dissolve the line between content and methods--and consequently bolsters teachers'' confidence in their delivery of math instruction. A strong emphasis on the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics five core standards provides key information common to most state curricula relative to NCTM standards for pre-K through sixth grade. In addition, text content is based on thorough elementary mathematical scope and sequences that have been shown to be an effective means for guiding the delivery of curriculum and instruction.

Review
"This text has everything that every good mathematics methods course needs to help develop good practitioners of Mathematics in Elementary School."

"This book is distinctive because of its deliberative integration of mathematics content and pedagogy. … Because I wish for elementary teachers to have strong mathematical content knowledge as well as wide repertories of mathematics teaching methods, I would consider adopting the proposed text."

"This textbook gives clearer examples of the inquiry technique and not only discusses Behaviorism, Direct Instruction and Constructivism, but compares them. The author does a great job of modeling ways to question and engage students in activities."

My "go-to" math reference book.
By Ms. H.
I love this book! I have been teaching fourth grade for three years, and have experience in grade levels K-5. I would recommend this book for elementary teachers at any grade level.

The book begins with a discussion of mathematical literacy, unveiling the “big ideas” in mathematics, then provides focal points by grade level. This compendium provides a roadmap targeting areas which will prove most helpful to student mathematicians.

The other element I greatly appreciated, are the inquiry-based lesson plans. As I read, I used color-coded markers to note lessons I want to try next year, and lessons I will use this year. I appreciate the concrete examples provided for inquiry-based lessons. I plan to implement an inquiry lesson each time I introduce a new topic to my students. The authors outline high-level tasks, differentiating them from low level tasks, helping me plan for more meaningful formative assessments.

With each topic, the authors include notes, providing specific guidance on how to address some of the issues I see in my classroom, such as which underlying concerns to look for when a student is having difficulty recalling basic math facts.

This book truly supports and informs my practice, and will be on my desk, as a “go-to” reference!

Useful and Informative
By N
This book was required for class but it is very useful. They have three sections in each chapter and each section provides some different insight. Though we know many of the basics of Elementary Mathematics as adults, we must understand that for young children it is not simple, just as it was not all that simple for us when we were children. This book provides great ways of understanding this and how we can help children learn mathematics through investigation rather than simply lecturing them.
