Old politics, new mysteries
By Beverley Strong
I found this to be a fascinating book, albeit at times, both confusing and exciting. Twenty something years previously, a small girl was kidnapped and presumed murdered, from a henge of standing stones in Avebury. Her sister was killed when she ran on to the road in an attempt to stop the car, leaving the children's nanny to take the blame for the whole affair. Years later, the nanny was thought to have suicided but her former husband, historian David Umber recieves a call from the now retired police Chief Inspector, George Sharpe, who was in charge of the kidnapping case, to ask his help in reopening the inveatigation. It's a story with many characters and many threads, which are so interwoven that, at times, it seemed to bog down under such a wealth of detail, and then, just when I found the going becoming a bit tedious, the author zooms you back with an exciting lead. It's clever writing, bound together with genuine historical facts about an 18th century political polemicist, Junius, whose writings are documented. It's a good read but not for those with a short attention span.

Duplicity

It is a warm July day in Avebury when a young child is snatched and another child is.killed during the course of the kidnapping. A young graduate student, David Umber, who is seeking to establish the identity of the anonymous 18th century polemist Junius, is one of the witnesses to the crime. Twenty-three years later, Umber is living a hand to mouth existence in Prague when he is contacted by the investigating officer, now retired, who has received a letter asking him to 're-investigate the case. The letter is signed Junius. What follows is a rollicking good yarn with plenty of twists and adventure. If you are feeling depressed, put off reading it to another day; but, do read it.

The Remains of the Day, by Kazuo Ishiguro

It is the summer of 1956, and Stevens, an aging English butler, embarks on a holiday that will take him deep into the countryside and into his past. For the first time in three decades, Stevens looks back on his long life of service and finds himself confronting the dark undercurrent in the life of his previous employer, Lord Darlington, and his own conflicted relationship with the housekeeper, Miss Kenton.

A contemporary classic, The Remains of the Day is Kazuo Ishiguro?s beautiful and haunting meditation on life between the wars, love denied, and the high cost of duty.

Praise for The Remains of the Day:

?An intricate and dazzling novel.? ?The New York Times
?Brilliant and quietly devastating.? ?Newsweek
?Ishiguro has become one of the finest prose stylists of our time.? ?Michael Ondaatje

Amazon.com Review
The novel's narrator, Stevens, is a perfect English butler who tries to give his narrow existence form and meaning through the self-effacing, almost mystical practice of his profession. In a career that spans the second World War, Stevens is oblivious of the real life that goes on around him -- oblivious, for instance, of the fact that his aristocrat employer is a Nazi sympathizer. Still, there are even larger matters at stake in this heartbreaking, pitch-perfect novel -- namely, Stevens' own ability to allow some bit of life-affirming love into his tightly repressed existence.

From Publishers Weekly
Greeted with high praise in England, where it seems certain to be shortlisted for the Booker Prize, Ishiguro's third novel (after An Artist of the Floating World ) is a tour de force-- both a compelling psychological study and a portrait of a vanished social order. Stevens, an elderly butler who has spent 30 years in the service of Lord Darlington, ruminates on the past and inadvertently slackens his rigid grip on his emotions to confront the central issues of his life. Glacially reserved, snobbish and humorless, Stevens has devoted his life to his concept of duty and responsibility, hoping to reach the pinnacle of his profession through totally selfless dedication and a ruthless suppression of sentiment. Having made a virtue of stoic dignity, he is proud of his impassive response to his father's death and his "correct" behavior with the spunky former housekeeper, Miss Kenton. Ishiguro builds Stevens's character with precisely controlled details, creating irony as the butler unwittingly reveals his pathetic self-deception. In the poignant denouement, Stevens belatedly realizes that he has wasted his life in blind service to a foolish man and that he has never discovered "the key to human warmth." While it is not likely to provoke the same shocks of recognition as it did in Britain, this insightful, often humorous and moving novel should significantly enhance Ishiguro's reputation here.

make the best with what we got
By Ana'FichesdeLectures
I could not have picked a better novel with the airing of Downton Abbey (season 5). Just the perfect message to start the new year. Many people have been recommending me this beautiful novel as one of their favorite and definitely, it has reached that special place.

"The Remains of the Day" presents the personal account of an English butler, Stevens, after WWII, who has reached the fading phase of his career. Stevens relates his most memorable moments of his profession before the war with nostalgia yet with pride.

The narrative is multilayered as Stevens revisit his past during a short trip he undertakes to the English country. The nature description of the country along with his remembrance, even with no apparent transition, forms a well compact and linear narrative, making it lyrical. For an instance, it reminded me a little of "The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry" and "The Emigrants".The timeline stretches up to 6 days and, therefore, it is a short, quick read but profound.

Stevens explanation of what being an English butler really means is outstanding and full of wisdom. The emphasis of professionalism and how his duty of service is a vocation made me revisit my work experience and depicts my mistakes. All the lessons Stevens shared are lessons that are applicable in whatever field of career one may be.

The importance of "emotional restraint" (p.44) and how maintaining our "dignity" (p.45) at all times are virtues that should be part of our professional values. Stevens expertly demonstrates all the different manners in which dignity should be practiced. We also encountered a debate on the different definitions of dignity.

Another aspect that I greatly enjoyed was the importance of small acts or what we may say, which could produce a series of unforeseen events. Stevens is cautious, loyal and unexpectedly sensible. However, he also shed lights on his shortcomings for not having a balanced life and for not being more conscious, at the time, nor being more assertive in mistakes his employer committed. His strong focus on his duty of service and loyalty to Lord Darlington veiled his judgements rendering him indifferent, even an accomplice, in a way, of what was happening around him. As a watched the movie directed by James Ivory (1993), afterwords, the scope of his mistakes are more evident. Stevens was portrayed as annoying and he was easy to dislike. I was completely enraptured by his work ethics when I was reading the book.

Stevens will be one of those characters I will be thinking often along the year. I can definitely see myself re-reading this novel. I enjoyed it very much. I so wished it was longer. I recommend the audio which was narrated by one of my favorite narrator, Simon Pebble. I discovered him when I read "1984" by George Orwell.

Kazuo Ishiguro's third novel, ''The Remains of the Day ...
By Amazon Customer
Kazuo Ishiguro's third novel, ''The Remains of the Day,'' is a dream of a book: a beguiling comedy of manners that evolves almost magically into a profound and heart-rending study of personality, class and culture. At the beginning, though, its narrator, an elderly English butler named Stevens, seems the least forthcoming (let alone enchanting) of companions. Cartoonishly punctilious and reserved, he edges slowly into an account of a brief motoring holiday from Oxfordshire to the West Country that he is taking alone at the insistence of his new employer, a genial American, Mr. Farraday.

A Novel for the Pauser
By BSK
I find that it is difficult to recommend “Remains” to people. To give an example: I do think a friend of mine would enjoy it, but I doubt he would get through the first two chapters before putting it down for good, as I know him not to stick with things if there is no immediate pay off.

“Remains” gives you very little, you have to do a lot for yourself; most of the main character's (Stevens) development is in the head of the reader, hence the title of my review. I found myself doing that hideously pretentious thing of lowering my kindle and look (thoughtfully) into the distance far too often during the reading, and still most of it only fell into place after finishing. A lot will depend on the reader's view on the ethics of intent and consequence.

I enjoy that, the wrestling with a thought or opinion until it makes sense. It is not dissimilar to the satisfaction of solving an equation.

The novel is written in first person and the reader have to sift everything Stevens says, not because he is lying to us, but because he is throughout the book struggling to reconcile the public view of his former employer with his own memories and opinions. Additionally he is troubled by the memories of the housekeeper from that time, with whom he now realises he might have had a future with.

In short; read it, it might be a novel for you.

All Devon Wright wants is peace and some time to chill with his boys. He's jerseyed up and waiting for his boy, Charles, to show up with tickets to the Atlanta Falcons' season opener. Instead, at his front door he finds "Satan's little sister," aka Quartisha Shauntae Randall, his baby momma. Once again, she's dropping off their daughter unexpectedly and ruining his plans.
Devon doesn't mind, though. His daughter, Brianna, is the most important thing in his life. He's worried about the poor example Shauntae (He refuses to EVER call her by her first name) is setting with her ghetto-fabulous lifestyle. He can't believe he ended up with such a crazy baby momma. He's vowed to stay away from all women for a while—until Charles introduces him to Cassandra.
Cassandra is nothing like Shauntae. She's a good, church-going woman. Devon is pleasantly surprised to find out that Cassandra's not what he thought a Christian woman would be. Cassandra Parker is not only fine; she's also smart, sassy, and sexy. Devon is intrigued, and he wants to get to know Cassandra better, but how will he be able to handle his daughter, his crazy baby momma, and a new woman in his life?

Just Wright
By Angelia Vernon Menchan
I have always been a fan of books by Sherri L. Lewis because she writes spiritual fiction that inspires but doesn't preach and entertains. Devon Wright is a single father with the baby mama from hades. He's a good man who has suffered and isn't looking for a permanent relationship. He gets with them then moves on. He has also become estranged from God. But a chance encounter with a spiritual woman can change all of that. But is he ready for spiritual change, fatherhood challenges and true commitment. Read Finding Mrs. Wright and find out. Great storytelling!

Bravo! Bravo!
By NC Bookworm
First - let me say, 'thank you' Sherri Lewis for writing another book. I read the acknowledgments and was shocked to learn that Ms. Lewis was now a full time missionary in Cameroon, West Africa.

Let me just say, your talent is too great to give up writing fiction. I feel blessed having read every single one of your books. You certainly have a way w/ words.

Finding Mrs. Wright was superb! Your writing made the characters so real, that Devon, Cassaundra, Briana, Chuckie, Mom, and Pop felt like family. Now, Shauntee, she was a horse of another color and the baby mama from hell!

I really liked how Devon grew into his relationship w/ God after meeting Cassaundra. It was gradual and subtle and mostly about opening his mind to receive God's plan for his life. He was an excellent father to Briana and my blood pressure would rise right along with his whenever he dealt with Shauntee, aka Quartisha.

Now Cassaundra, she is one of the best female characters I have ever read about. I mean, a triple threat, brains, beauty, body and with a sweet soul and heart of gold. I loved her confidence and her way with people. So cute how she always called Devon 'playa'.

The friendship-lovematch b/t Devon and Cassaundra flows so naturally and is 'just right' from start to finish. Normally, children have somewhat of an 'ornamental' role in novels, but Briana was a main character and contributed significantly to the story line.

The drama with Shauntee was exhausting. A mother should be a role model and not the worse possible influence on her daughter. She was raising Briana to be a HIT (ho-in-training) and just like herself

Devon's parents were also adorable and sooooo supportive.

This was a great novel and worth the wait. Sherri you MUST continue to bless us w/ your gift for writing.

P.S. One small criticism, Devon described himself with a clean-shaven head, but the book cover has a guy w/ a small afro. Overall, the bookcover was a turnoff, but knowing the quality of Sherri's books, I read it anyway.

Rethinking Learning in Early Childhood Education, by Nicola Yelland, Libby Lee, Maureen O'Rourke, Cathie Harrison

"I think a real strength of the book is the use of the case studies to ground the points made and to offer in-depth insights into practice."
Jackie Marsh, University of Sheffield, UK

This exciting book considers the nature of young children's lives and how this can, and should, inform early childhood education in practical ways. It examines:

  • What is it like for young children to learn in the 21st century?
  • How can we link this to new and innovative ways of providing relevant and engaging learning contexts for young children?
  • What it means to be multiliterate in the 21st century
The book explores how learning and engagement with ideas can be extended through the use of new technologies, describing how information and communications technologies enable young people to extend the boundaries of their learning and social interactions.

These experiences have important implications for formal learning environments and the nature of the curriculum, including bold new approaches to teaching and learning which offer opportunities for children to investigate in new ways. This book provides examples of the ways in which early childhood teachers have extended opportunities for new types of learning for children by creating contexts in which they are able to explore and represent their ideas and thinking in multimodal formats using new technologies.

This book represents a research-based discussion for rethinking learning in the 21st century and includes various case studies and scenarios to enable students and practising teachers to try out new ideas. Must read for all teachers and managers
By Sammy
The principles in this book are critical for all educators from early childhood to tertiary. The fundamental principles also need to be applied to adult learning in organisations. I am familiar with the work of Cathie Harrison and this collaborative work again demonstrates the absolute commitment to excellence, relevance, practical implementation and inclusion. This book not only outlines a wonderful framework for moving education into the 21st Century - it also is a model of the principles it promotes. Well done - I hope you have made sure Ken Robinson has a copy of this!!

Counting for Nothing: What Men Value and What Women are Worth (Heritage), by Marilyn Waring

Safe drinking water counts for nothing. A pollution-free environment counts for nothing. Even some people - namely women - count for nothing. This is the case, at least, according to the United Nations System of National Accounts. Author Marilyn Waring, former New Zealand M.P., now professor, development consultant, writer, and goat farmer, isolates the gender bias that exists in the current system of calculating national wealth.

As Waring observes, in this accounting system women are considered 'non-producers' and as such they cannot expect to gain from the distribution of benefits that flow from production. Issues like nuclear warfare, environmental conservation, and poverty are likewise excluded from the calculation of value in traditional economic theory. As a result, public policy, determined by these same accounting processes, inevitably overlooks the importance of the environment and half the world's population.

Counting for Nothing, originally published in 1988, is a classic feminist analysis of women's place in the world economy brought up to date in this reprinted edition, including a sizeable new introduction by the author. In her new introduction, the author updates information and examples and revisits the original chapters with appropriate commentary. In an accessible and often humorous manner, Waring offers an explanation of the current economic systems of accounting and thoroughly outlines ways to ensure that the significance of the environment and the labour contributions of women receive the recognition they deserve.

'I've often commented on the way the work of women is excluded from our national accounting and overlooked in economics in general. And, alas, I've done very little about it. Now this splendid work goes far to fill this appalling gap. No concerned woman (or man) can ignore it.' - John Kenneth Galbraith, Harvard University

'As one might expect from a woman courageous enough to make a stand, on a point of principle, that brought down a government, this is a forthright, serious, and eloquent book.' - New Statesman

A transformational assessment
By Lucas Kilravey
Waring's work on the place and valuation of women and care in economic theory and practice is an invaluable read for those wishing to understand how ostensibly neutral economic logic makes inevitable normative claims. Moreover, in assessing these normative claims, Waring is insightful and unafraid to follow them through to their logical (perhaps, more aptly illogical) conclusion.

While arguably not the most accessible of texts, this book is not intentionally obscurantist. It is definitely worth a look for those wishing to critically consider the interaction between normative claims and economics.

A Confusing Way of Presenting the Material
By Olivia
I was nervous about starting a graduate level accounting class, so I bought two other financial accounting textbooks at used bookstores in order to prepare for this class, and I'm glad I did because they explained more about the topic than this book - which was the required book for the class. This text does a great job of making a boring and difficult subject even more confusing and frustrating. The My Accounting Lab is a mess, and a lot of the quizzes contain material from later chapters and take hours to find the information for. The eText Pages option during quizzes and homework take you to pages that don't actually cover the material they're supposed to, and my professor actually stopped using My Accounting Lab a third of the way through the semester because the class was having so many difficulties and the help line didn't provide solutions. By far my worst experience with a text book and online lab!

A note to the people complaining about not received the access code when buying used: used books generally don't come with access to the online labs. Some texts have free websites to accompany their books, but they won't specify having to use an access code to get into those sites. Access code = limited access to those who pay a bunch of money for new editions and codes.

By Kruti
I bought this book for my Financial Accounting class at UF. The teacher went over the same concepts as the book, however the book did a much better job in explaining them. It explains the concepts clearly and with great examples that spread across a whole chapter so that you can build upon what you learn step by step. I would recommend it for anyone who doesn't know anything about financial accounting. If you know are knowledgeable in the subject you might want to get something that will go a little deeper into the subject. The reason I am giving it 4 stars instead of 5 is because I do not find the subject to be incredibly interesting, however it accomplishes its goal.

Use for MBA
By Wolf.
This book was a requirement for the Financial Accounting class in my MBA course. I was put off by the price but found it is worth every penny. The overall layout is very logical, each chapter has numerous 'real world' examples and ends with more sample problems than you could ever hope to solve. 'Check Figure' partial solutions are provided in one of several useful appendices.
I started out knowing absolutely nothing about accounting, now I have a firm foundation thanks more to this excellent book than my professor ...
I will never sell this book
