A unique love letter to the Gold Rush town of Paradise, California!

CALIFORNIA LEGENDS...These are chronicles of the Old West--of the native people who lived on the land for generations and the pioneers who came from all over the world in search of riches…the struggle to survive in a land without laws…the strange bedfellows that resulted from the clash of cultures…and the common language of the heart that spoke of a love more precious than gold.

NATIVE GOLD: Book 1

Mathilda Hardwicke, a rebellious artist rejected by her family and New York society, heads west to Gold Rush California to make a new life for herself as a mail-order bride. When fate leaves her at the altar in Paradise Bar--a ramshackle gold camp full of ragtag miners--she's sure she's leaped out of the frying pan and into the fire.

But unbeknownst to Mattie, she has a protector. Sakote, a fierce Konkow warrior, is bound by honor to watch over the white woman. And though his tribe is threatened by the encroaching miners, he's strangely drawn to Mattie, who delights in making pictures of him and whose destiny seems entwined with his.

When a tragedy at the camp forces Sakote to steal Mattie away, she finds herself in an unfamiliar Paradise of savage wonder, and she soon discovers a forbidden love more precious than gold.

Delightful Racy Romance
By Janette Skinner
Normally I don't read much romance, and when I do I find it difficult to review as there is often not much depth to the plot. This book has been an exception, and I really enjoyed the story. It is the tale of a young woman Mattie, an artist, who finds herself a bit of a misfit in her family. Orphaned and looked after by relatives she has been, by their standards, a bit of a disappointment and at times a downright embarrassment.

This courageous girl decides to take responsibility for her own future and sets off on an adventurous life journey. She tries to make the best of the difficult journey to the gold mines of the west;

'Mattie found adventure in the adversity' (location 467) seems to sum up her personality.

The story is flawlessly written and the pace is good. It certainly helped that the hero is a tall handsome noble Native American, one of my own favourite personal fantasies. After a few false starts the couple manage to get together and their romancing takes part in the most beautifully described locations; waterfalls, meadows, woods, an Indian village. You can almost smell the perfume of the pines, the bay and the wildflowers which adds texture to the story. The use of language is original with words like `pinkened' and expressions like `a cheek grown hot with impropriety' which paint a romantic picture.

There is a fair amount of sexual tension and action, but this is not overdone, but for me the best thing about the book is the writers subtle way of illustrating the physical characteristics of Sakote; `the flicking of his head to toss his hair over his shoulders' made me come over just a bit flushed to be honest. (location1717)

I have no problem in recommending this book, even to those who normally avoid romance.

A Love More Precious than a Claim Full of Gold
By Past Romance
I am a big Glynnis Campbell fan. Actually, that's a bit of an understatement. I LOVE her books. From her medieval Warrior Maidens to her Knights and Vikings, her characters feel so real that you actually miss them when the book is finished. This book is no different--transporting readers back to 1850's Paradise, CA, right in the middle of the Gold Rush.

Raised as a proper lady in New York, Mattie has a miserable life. Her only joy comes from her art. Unfortunately, her uncle, who took her in when her parents died, does not think it is an appropriate means of expression. After a rather embarrassing unveiling of her latest painting, she finds herself quite without options. An ad in the newspaper by a doctor in California looking for a wife seems like her only hope of escape.

Only once she gets to the remote mining camp, things do not go to plan. Her fiancee turned out to be a horrible person and he met an untimely death the night before she arrived. Alone and helpless, Mattie finds help from an unlikely source--the other miners. Although very rough around the edges, they quickly band together to help the pretty lady and soon begin eagerly competing for her attention.

But it's not only the other miners that notice Mattie. Sakote, a leader of the Konkow tribe, catches sight of Mattie outside her cabin and she intrigues him. Because of circumstances, he ends up vowing to look after the young white woman and see her through the harsh winter. But it was more than duty that made him want to protect her. He saw his destiny in the eyes of the beautiful woman that could draw such magical pictures.

Worlds collide as Mattie and Sakote begin to fall in love. Everything seems to conspire against the two, tearing apart both of their worlds. Will their love be able to bring peace between the miners and the Konkow tribe? Or will it mean the end of the Konkows' way of life forever?

This story is impossible to put down once you begin. The descriptions of both the mining camp and the Konkow way of life are so vivid that you can see them in your mind's eye just like you were standing there in their midst. You can tell that the author spent a great deal of time researching both the location and the time period. The story itself is just magical--warm and lighthearted one moment, steamy and heart-pounding the next. I enjoyed every last page. The only problem? I'll have to wait a little while longer for the release of book two!!

Recommended Historical Read
By Historical Romance Books
It seems there is a rising trend in Native American romance novels, and after reading Native Gold, it doesn't seem like a bad thing at all. The last one I read was awkward in its reconciliation between Western and Native American culture. Often they make light of the cultural beliefs by adding jumping bear references. Campbell doesn't do this. She achieves a calming story with a detailed exploration of life in the American gold fields.

Mathilda (Mittie) is a woman looking for herself and seeking to start again, armed only with optimism and her artistic skills, she ventures well beyond her known world. While Sakote is a man losing himself and his culture, caught between Konkow pride and power, and the things he must do to survive.

Mattie is a well created character, strong but also nave. Audiences should be able to find something in Mattie to connect with, even if it is just her passion and drive to live in a world where she has no idea what she's in for.

Sakote is a compelling character. Strong in his silence and peace. He is a wonderful balance to Mattie's chaos. Some of the best parts in the book and associated with his calming influence. He moves with a gentle pace, and seems to really see the world. Sakote is protective, without being constrictive or controlling, which is never a good thing.

The tension between Mattie and Sakote crackles from the second he sees her, it feels like the characters are drawn together and are completed by the other in away they are not even aware of. The book has very few actual sexual interludes, it focusing on creating a natural courtship presented in agonizingly described detail which still has my heart pounding. Campbell's description of the way he moves, his skin, his smell is enough to sustain even my jaded mind.

Highly recommend to people ready to fall in love and ache for a time when things were certainly not simple, but definitely a little wild.
